Australian Amateur U26 & U21 Singles & Doubles - Fri. 20 ~ Sun. 22 March

The weekend of the Australian Amateur Juniors was a great success in showcasing our young talent and energy for the game. Play commenced on Friday and ran through Sunday afternoon with 4 draws being held; U21 singles, U26 A&B division singles and U26 doubles.

Thursday, 2nd Apr

Melbourne’s juniors made up the majority of the field, while there also being representation from Ballarat, New York and Newport.

The finals started on Sunday with the U26 B Division final on court first, Joseph Filippelli taking on Lewis Jan. Lewis got off to a fast start, taking the first set 6/2. The second set was tight and went to 4/4, but Lewis was able to pull away the final two games to defeat Joseph 6/2 6/4. Next up was a double header for the U26 doubles semi finals. On the south court, Emma Clyde and Jimmy O’Sullivan battled Ben Dickinson and Xavier Wilson in a 3 setter that went 6/2 2/6 6/1 in favor of Ben and Xavier. On the North court, Rhys Williams and Nick Stenning bested Oscar Newall and James Cannon in dominant fashion, 6/2 6/2.

The U21 singles final showcased Ballarat and Melbourne’s best up and coming talent in Oscar Newall and Hugh Schultz. The match consisted of many long rallies, which made it a great match to watch. Ultimately the teachings of Chris Ronaldson proved to be too strong for Schultz and Oscar was able to walk away with a 6/3 6/3 win.

The U26 singles final featured Melbourne’s Rhys Williams and Newport’s Ben Dickinson. In a 3 setter that lasted a little over 2 hours, this match could’ve gone either way. Williams got off to a strong start in the first set going up 5/2 and was able to close out the set 6/4. The second set was very back and forth with Dickinson being able to squeak it out 6/4. Dickinson got off to a strong start in the 3rd, going up 3/0. Williams went on a run of his own by taking the next 4 games. Dickinson was able to take the next 3 games to win the 3 and final set 6/4.

The U26 doubles between Williams/Stenning and Dickinson/Wilson was a one sided first set and a close 2nd which saw Dickinson/Wilson with set points. In the end, Williams/Stenning pulled away winning 6/0 6/5.
