New Stock in the Pro Shop – Tracksuit Pants
The weather is cooling down now and the last of summer seems to have gone. The time has come for a change of tennis kit and we have the perfect solution, try out our latest addition to the Pro Shop. The tracksuit pants have been sourced from Babolat in France and will keep your legs toasty warm and looking trim, taut and terrific on court.

Ted Cockram Trophy 2017
Julian Snow
The Ted Cockram Trophy (international amateur team event for Over 50s, with ties of 3 singles matches and 2 doubles matches) will next take place in Melbourne from 21 – 23 January 2017.

I have been appointed to captain the Australian team. If you are of the appropriate age (date of birth 1 January 1958 – 31 December 1967 inclusive) and standard (handicap <25) and would like to be considered for selection, please email me at at your earliest convenience.

Tournament Reports

Exhibition St Cup
There were some positive features to report. Mirabile dictu there was food available for the players on the Saturday, as well as an improved players’ lunch on the Sunday (well done PA – keep up the good work). I discovered a live garden slug within my salad, which ‘proves it was fresh’ according to Paul. The venerable (now 78yo) James Guest won two matches on the Saturday, both by a score of 9/6 against competitive opponents, yet retained sufficient puff to provide a comprehensive de-brief of his winning strategies to anyone within earshot. Julia McCahey excelled to win three matches over the week-end, notably a 9/6 win over 10 handicap Paul Rosedale, but, from 12 handicap points over the maximum difference of 50 that the singles calculator caters for, was inevitably fighting a losing battle in the final which I won 9/3.

There was also some doubles played (for a real trophy, generously presented some years ago by Josef Brunhuber to mark the fantastic day in 2007 when he carried Peter Estcourt to victory). This year the winners were Vince Scopelliti and Jackson Brand.

Upcoming Tournaments

Ladies weekend at the Club is this weekend with the Judith Clarke Cup and the Australian Amateur Ladies Singles and Doubles Championships being played all weekend. Come down and support the ladies in their battle against their brethren from Hobart and in their individual endeavours across the weekend.

Squash and Tennis Tournament – Saturday 4th June
Test your tennis skills on a simpler court, join in the squash and tennis tournament for a chance to take on the squash players on the tennis court and then find out why a few of them still play that other game. The day will include handicap tennis, handicap squash and some food in the middle.

Alan Hamer Club Doubles, B & C Grade – Saturday and Sunday 11th, 12th June
The graded Club Doubles competition is coming up with the B and C Grades being played over one weekend and the Main Draw to be played later in the year. The graded competition is open to any players handicap 12-35 so put your name down and get involved in a weekend of high quality doubles.

Introductory Evening – Wednesday 8th June
The Club is always looking for potential new members and this is a perfect opportunity to introduce someone to the Club and our wonderful game. Run in the evening from 6-8PM, this event is usually well subscribed with 10 or more new players all seeing the game with fresh eyes. Take this opportunity and bring someone new to the game in to experience our game under the guidance of the professionals.

Dark MOFO Tournament in Hobart – Saturday and Sunday 18th, 19th June
The Dark MOFO tournament is being held in Hobart again this year. It is set to coincide with the last weekend of the music and arts festival organised by MONA owner David Walsh and last year’s edition was a terrific success. We need a lady to champion the tournament in Melbourne so if you’re keen to play in Hobart and attend an exciting tournament and weekend please let us know.
See you on court

Finally, new safety glasses have been purchased for use by members. 4 pairs have been placed by each court and are recommended to all players for ocular protection.
