20 young players fronted the Club early Saturday afternoon for the End of Year Tournament and Christmas Party. Lancelot Stewart and Blake Hillebrand as organisers took charge of turning the Club into a cruise liner preparing to sail the Croatian coast. The introduction of a few additional rules and the sounding of a horn to celebrate winning openings and aces was a revolution for the day.
After a long day's play and many close matches the finalists were decided with the undefeated pair of Xavier Wilson and James Ciro taking on Julia McCahey and Jesse Laeuchli in the first semi final and Henry Edwards and Aidan Chu meeting Will Buckley and John Woods-Casey in the second semi. Despite a slow start to the day the McCahey/Laeuchli pair had a strong win in their match while Edward/Chu continued with their improvements and comfortably won their match.
The final was a very well contested match in which the score didn't reflect the quality of tennis. The boys played a tight game making very few errors and came out on top 7/3 winners when the timer went off. In the spirit of the theme the winners were awarded the grand prize of the remote control cruiser which they generously donated to a children's charity the following day.
The Christmas Party followed immediately from the tennis, with some not waiting for the matches to finish before getting started on dinner. Lancelot and Blake provided lamb souvlakis which were very well received by all and thoroughly enjoyed.
On conclusion of the finals the playing group was joined by invited friends of players for the party. Lancelot's music started playing through the clubhouse and the revelry began in earnest. Food and drink helped loosen limbs and the squash court turned into a pseudo dance floor. Around 30 young players and acquaintances chatted and danced the night away, leaving the Club in the wee hours of the morning.
Sincere thanks go to Lancelot, Blake and Paul Rosedale for their efforts in organising and running the day, making it the enormous success it was. We are already looking forward to next year's edition, with many other fun events between now and then.
