Judith Clarke and Australian Women’s Amateur Doubles Weekend 2012
It was an all women’s affair last weekend as the RMTC hosted the Judith Clarke Trophy (RMTC vs. Hobart) and Australian Women’s Amateur Doubles Tournament.
The weekend kicked off with a terrific gourmet Pizza Night on the Friday all thanks to Lizzie Brown and her creative team of pizza chefs.
The next morning classic handicap tennis began the event. The scores throughout the day see-sawed. Melbourne and Hobart were tied at 8 all heading into the afternoon. Isabelle Carr was the star of the day as she carved perfect length ground stokes into the corners assisting Melbourne’s slim victory, 9-8.
To celebrate, a spontaneous dinner was arranged on the Saturday night at Bihn Minn’s. Good food and great company combined to make an enjoyable night.
Following the Judith Clarke Trophy Jo Edwards and Wendy Whitehead challenged Kate Brown and Julianne Drewitt in the Australian Women’s Amateur Doubles semi final. After a slow start by the Ballarat ladies, 6-1 to Hobart in the first set, Jo and Wendy kicked into gear, winning the second set 6/2 and holding two match points in the final set. But they could not shake Kate’s stare and Julianne’s consistent form. The final score 6/1, 2/6, 6/5.
After such a close semi final Amy Hayball and Rose Snell weren’t sure what to expect from Kate and Julianne in the final but came out firing taking out the first set 6/1. Amy and Rose continued their consistent form winning the second set 6/3.
On Sunday morning the pros created a special mixed doubles event in which Hobart women paired up with Melbourne women. The Final, Annabelle Guest and Christine Stirling defeated Isabelle Carr and Michelle Moore.
Overall, the spirit on court was fantastic and I’d like to thank all the Hobart women for travelling to Melbourne and making the weekend a huge success. A special thank you must go to the Pros, Natasha Heughen, Lizzie Brown and finally Judith Sear who made a delicious apple cake. The talk of the day!!
