Day 5 Results from the Link Pumps Australian Open in Melbourne…

It was singles semis day on Saturday and the highlight of the day was Ben Matthews!

4th seed Matthews (UK) reached his first national Open final by beating Bryn Sayers (2) in a fine five set battle that lasted just on three hours. Ben showed great composure after Bryn came back to level the match at two sets all; he started the final set with aggression and never looked back. The final scoreline – 2/6 6/1 6/0 4/6 6/3. Ben will meet Robert Fahey who is not in his first Open final! Fahey was too good at the key times against Kieran Booth, the 3rd seed. The battle of the Tasmanians was very competitive but Fahey was never in deep trouble, winning 6/4 6/2 6/5. (Interestingly, we think Fahey has been in around 60 national Open finals, of which he has won some 46!!!)

In the women’s event, both seeds had untroubled semi-final wins. Claire Vigrass (1) defeated Pru McCahey easily and Kate Leeming (2) had a comfortable win over Sue Haswell. The women’s final will be a battle between the two top ranked players in the women’s game.
