TOURNAMENT REPORTS

Richmond Silver Racket – 18-20 Aug
Congratulations to Owen Guest (one of the RMTC’s quirks is that if you win a tournament you are asked to write the report, so here goes).

Originally the Mount Ridley Silver Racket, the Richmond Silver Racket is the RMTC’s premier Handicap Singles event (entries are restricted to the top 16 players). The action started on Friday evening when the in-form John Woods-Casey (16.8) fell victim to AUS Clothier representative Jackson Brand (35.8) in three sets. Other matches included CJ White (playing off 13.6) accounting for Frank Filippelli (1.0) and Paul Rosedale (10.3) doing very well against Andy “Big Red” Fowler (8.2), sending him back to Ballarat with his tail between his legs.

Come the semi-finals CJ didn’t waste time in accounting for Rosedale (6/1 6/3) and on the other side Owen Guest took a while to warm up before ending Jackson’s run (2/6 6/0 6/2).

The final saw CJ aiming to become the event’s first three time winner but within a few games this started to look unlikely. In the first set, Owen’s mix of serves made it difficult for CJ as he could neither go around him nor through him. In the second set CJ had a few chances but from 3/3 Owen closed out the match with a series of aggressive service returns, heavy breathing and committed running (Final Score: 6/1 6/3).

TOURNAMENT REPORTS

RMTC vs MCCRTS – Sat-Sun 22-23 August
A Wonderful Weekend In Ballarat

On Saturday 22 July MCC hosted RMTC in an annual tournament between the two Clubs in Ballarat. We enjoyed a great day of tennis. Although I have to admit we knew it would be a tough battle from the outset when we saw MCC had stacked their team full of Ballarat members! Local court knowledge proved decisive as MCC powered to a 5/3 victory.

Alan Willingham put in a best on court performance for RMTC with two wins, one with Vince Scopelliti and another with Fred Kininmonth. Annie & Geoff Dempster closed out the day with a fine win in the last match to finish on a winning note. Thank you to Roland Scollay and Ian Bull for also travelling up the highway to play for RMTC.

Congratulations to the MCC team consisting of Anne Strange, Jim Stephen, Greg Henderson, Jo Edwards, Stuart Strange, Greg Reid, Yvonne Rout, Rob Jolly and Tim Raw. Thanks to Tim & his helpers for arranging lunch. It was also good to see MCCRTS president Andrew Gould and Merrin Mackay supporting from the warmth of the club rooms with Nathan Baker, Cath Collins and Wendy Whitehead dropping in throughout the day.

The Ballarat Tennis Club shares the ground of the Mecure Ballarat Hotel & Convention Centre, where a dinner was held to welcome new professional Andrew Fowler and his partner Maria. Andrew has worked at RMTC, NYRTC and Queen’s Club amongst others in a fine career. He grew up in Ballarat and it was clear from the 60 guests gathered there that it was a hearty welcome for a returning favourite son. None were happier that evening than Andrew’s parents Graham and Cathy Fowler.

It was also announced that Stuart Strange would be handing over the presidency of BTC to Nathan Baker. Stuart has been a big supporter and promoter of tennis in Ballarat and a frequent visitor to play at RMTC in various inter club and Boomerang tournaments. Thank you Stuart for your contribution to the game and we welcome Nathan in his new role as president of BTC.

Victorian Open Singles and Doubles – Fri-Sun 28-30 July
The Victorian Open was held this past weekend with the first round matches played on Friday night. The semi-finals of the singles went as the handicaps suggested they should with Kieran Booth overpowering CJ White 6/2 6/0 and Andrew Fowler coming through a strong performance from the improving Paul Rosedale winning 6/5 2/6 6/2. In the doubles the local pair of Frank Filippelli and John Woods-Casey proved too consistent for the Ballarat pair of Fowler and White winning 6/4 6/2.

The finals went as scripted. Kieran and Paul were too strong for Frank and John despite a very close first set, after which Kieran took over the match and put the result beyond any doubt. The final score was 6/5 6/0. Kieran also took out the doubles in a dominant display over Andrew winning 6/2 6/0. Congratulations to Kieran on winning his fourth consecutive Victorian Open singles and doubles titles and fifth total doubles title.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Welcome Scott Girvan – RMTC Assistant Professional

It is with great pleasure that the Committee announces the appointment of Scott Girvan to our professional team. Scott commenced work this week, so please introduce yourself to him when you are next in the Club. He’s a bright and friendly addition to the team with strong background in tennis.  He has played high level tennis (grade 4) for Knox, coached for 5 years and worked for the Australian Open managing a team of ball kids.

Frank and Jonners are very impressed with his natural ball skills and believe he will be able to develop into a very competitive player in the future. He’s a natural competitor and eager to learn.

Like John Woods-Casey, Scott is in his mid-twenties and together they will be able to develop their game under the tutelage of our senior pro-team of Frank, Jonners and Kate. Having some great senior teaching pros in the Club, the Committee considers this a perfect time to invest in bringing more youth into the professional ranks of real tennis. RMTC and the other Australian Clubs have been a great source of real tennis professionals and we intend to continue this role.

Hobart is currently searching for an assistant professional (please contact Christine Stirling – President HRTC – if you know of any talent for this role). This is great news as it will provide more opportunities for our young pros to develop together and help generate more interest in the game amongst younger members.

It would be lovely to see Scott follow in the footsteps of many of our Aussie pros. As an example, years ago a youthful Andrew Fowler from Ballarat joined our professional ranks. We now welcome Andrew back this week to Australia having taken up the role of head professional at Ballarat Tennis Club. There is a dinner in Ballarat this weekend to welcome him back – see pro-shop for details.

Scott, we welcome you to RMTC and wish you a successful and enjoyable career in real tennis.

Fred Kininmonth – President

TOURNAMENT REPORTS

Christmas in July Mixed Doubles – 19 July
Ten brave pairs turned up to weather the wintry conditions on court at the RMTC on Sunday 16th July to play the Christmas in July Mixed Doubles – and believe me it felt every bit as cold as a winter’s day in England! Christmas spirit abounded though with Christmas music and a wonderful roast lunch with all the trimmings, cooked by Lisa and followed by, of course, the traditional plum pudding.

The tennis soon warmed us up and a fantastic day was had by all. It was great to see a few new faces and for some the stress of scoring was more of a challenge than the stress of playing!

Marissa Barter-Waters and John Link only lost one match all day (and that by only one game) and had a resounding victory over runners up Dominic Emery and Judy Collins to win 6 games to 1 in the Final. Congratulations too to the semi-finalists, Fiona Hewson and Charlie Wright and to Geoff and Annie Dempster, who all played some great tennis.

Many thanks to Fiona Hewson for all her hard work and the successful organisation of such an enjoyable day.
Judy Collins

TOURNAMENT REPORTS

Australian Junior Team at the US Nationals
It was a successful week at the US National Championships for our juniors in preparation for their matches against the US and UK teams. The U23 and U26 singles and doubles championships were held at the Racquet Club of Philadelphia with all five of our juniors entering. Our first and second players, Michael Williams and Will Hoskin, ensured that there was some Australian flavour in all of the finals coming away with both U26 titles. Michael won the U26 singles without dropping a set and he and Will repeated the dose in the doubles. Will made both U23 finals as well to be narrowly beaten by the US #1 in both. The rest of the team comprising of John Moran, Richard Pagone and Jackson Brand gained valuable competition experience on a foreign court.

G Moran (manager), J Brand, R Pagone, J Moran, M Williams, W Hoskin                                        U26 Doubles Final

The team will now travel to Boston where they will compete in the Clothier and Limb Cups, against the US and UK junior teams respectively, beginning tonight local time. We wish all of them luck, all of the matches can be viewed online live and in replay by clicking here.

The Australian Ladies Amateur Singles Championship was won by our very own Jo See Tan who defeated Rose Blanden in a very tense and tight affair in the semi-final before going on to take the title in straight sets against Jo Edwards. It was a well-deserved reward for the hard work that she has been putting into tennis over the last 12 months.
JS Tan df. J Edwards 6/1 6/3

The Australian Ladies Amateur Doubles Championship was another close match with Rose Blanden and Jo Edwards finally taking the title having undertaken a immense comeback in the final set to get over Jo See Tan and Julianne Drewitt.

Australian Amateur Junior Singles Championship – Sat-Sun 17-18 Jun
Michael Williams won his third Australian junior title with a dominant display to win in straight sets over Will Hoskin from Ballarat.
M Williams df. W Hoskin 6/1 6/0

Alan Hamer Cup Club Doubles – Sat 17 Jun
Kieran Booth and Daniel Williams won their third club doubles title in a row beating the spirited pairing of Michael Williams and Paul Rosedale. There were many spectacular rests, particularly in the closely fought second set, but the class of Kieran combined with the calmness of Daniel was enough to see off any serious threat.
