With the end of another great year fast approaching, it is timely to reflect on not only the achievements of the Club over the past twelve months, but also consider some of the rules of etiquette that contribute to and enhance the enjoyment of the Club for all Members.

Club Policy in regards to Dogs

There have been a number of complaints received recently from Members in regards to dogs being brought onto the Club premises and left unattended and untethered.

It is the policy of the Club that should Members need to bring their dog/s to the Club, these dogs must be tethered at all times. Dogs are not permitted to be off lead and wandering unattended outside or inside the Club premises or pool enclosure area.

Please ensure that this policy is adhered to at all times as it would be unfortunate for the Club to be forced to consider a ‘no dog’ policy should dogs continue to be left untethered.

Car Park

Just a reminder that it is the policy of the Club that Members only park their vehicles in the Club car park when utilising the Club’s facilities. There have been a number of complaints recently received from Members in regards to vehicles that appear to have been left at the Club for extended periods of time and when the owners of these vehicles are not utilising the Club’s facilities. This can be particularly problematic during peak tennis periods when car parking is limited and with Boomerang and the Australian Open fast approaching, it is timely to remind all Members of this policy.

TENNIS COMMITTEE
John Moran
The junior weekend of tennis started with a bang on Saturday with the Under 35’s Tournament. 13 competitors faced off fiercely in a heated battle. We had two new challengers approach the plate, Steve Hi Ho and Dominic Emery, who provided a spirited contest throughout the day. A special mention to
the pregnant Georgie who kept pushing and John Moran for providing light refreshments and punishments for the day.

Two pools strived for glory with James Gould and Paul Rosedale putting on another timeless performance on the south court. Jo See Tan went through on the north court after crushing everyone in her wake. Jo See Tan and Saskia Bollerman wrestled in a tough final with Jo See taking the chocolates and the cup.

The activities throughout the day proceeded into the night with JWC in sizzling form on the BBQ.

Sunday arose and 5 rivals kept up the junior ranks. 1 player stood up and hit everyone out of the park. Olivia Carr was on another level and took out the Jim Bailey Cup for the second time, the first being 7 years ago, maintaining the Carr dynasty with both Simon and Isabelle Carr also being previous champions.

A big thank you to the pros for organizing this great event and putting in their time and effort behind the scenes.

Finals Day

A fine crowd were treated to some excellent finals tennis last Sunday. We commenced proceedings from 9am with the winners from the quarterly medal rounds throughout the year playing off in a knock out handicap competition. Jeremy Hawkins, having joined our Club in January continues to improve and advanced to the final to meet in form Quentin Clark. Quentin overcame the fast starting Jeremy and handicap disadvantage, to settle and scrape over the line with a tight 6/5 win. Superior court craft and experience won through in the end.

Medal of Medalists, one set to 6. Quentin Clark def Jeremy Hawkins 6/5

It has been satisfying to watch the continued development of our younger players, none more impressive than Michael Williams and James Gould this year. James was still in celebration mode after his grudge match win over Paul Rosedale in the semi-final. He used the same heavy forcing tactics he employed against Rosie, however Michael’s solid defence and much improved railroad limited James’ opportunities in the final. Played off level, left handed James couldn’t overcome the lower handicapped Michael. Michael won in impressive fashion.

Ford Strachan Junior Club Championship, best of 3 sets. Michael Williams def James Gould 6/3 6/1

It was a pleasure to see Rose Snell on court again after being side-lined with injury and now playing such good tennis again. She met her sparring partner Prue McCahey in the Women’s Club Championship. The gallery was treated to some delightful stroke play by both players. There were plenty of short chases and loose balls were punished. Rose responded in the second set, jumping out to a 3 game lead, only to see Prue find her rhythm and claim another Championship.

Women’s A Grade Club Championship, best of 3 sets. Prue McCahey def Rose Snell 6/2 6/4

Dan Williams has been a consistent performer this year and won his way through a talented field to challenge Kieran Booth for the Gold Racket. Are we seeing a change of baton with no Snow, Happell or Richardson in 2015? If we are, that’s fine because Dan showed us why he deserves to be there. He played extremely well defending against the hard forcing Kieran who just loves drilling any loose serve into the dedans. Returning in good form from the British Open, Kieran looked comfortable throughout the match and defended his Gold Racket title by winning in straight sets.
Congratulations also to Dan, who as runner-up is now the winner of the Silver Racket. It’s the final where everyone’s a winner!

The Gold Racket, best of 5 sets. Kieran Booth def Daniel Williams 6/3 6/2 6/1

‘Iron man’ Quentin Clark immediately after his win in the Medal of Medalists faced off against handicap specialist ‘I will not be beaten’ Julian Snow in the final of the John Poolman Trophy. This is the Club premier handicap singles event. To reach the final is an honour. Quentin tried early to rattle Julian by releasing a Youtube video. It had the desired early effect with Quentin leading early in this first to 9 encounter. The owe 40, receive 30, one serve, ban tambour handicap was a challenge for Julian, usually one that he relishes. However, I don’t think he expected to dig out so many deep balls cut into the corners by Quentin. Julian really had to work for this win and if it wasn’t for the many sets Quentin had played earlier, the result may well have been different. Julian wins again!

John Poolman Trophy, one set to 9 games. J Snow def Q Clark 9/5

Thank you to the pro team who did a great job marking throughout the day. Thank you to Julie Baker for her organisation for the day and also a special thank you to Ken Penaluna for producing a fantastic selection of cakes for afternoon tea. Ken baked banana, apple and a number of chocolate cakes for the afternoon tea on Finals Day. Thanks Ken! They were greatly appreciated by all.

Congratulations to all competitors who advanced through a year of competition to play some terrific tennis on Finals Day. Well done to all the winners. Thank you to those that also came to support. This included a special visit from Wayne Davies (past world champion, living in USA) and Graham Hyland, legend of the game travelling up especially from Tasmania. You helped create a great atmosphere which was enjoyed by both player and spectator a like. So much so, that Lizzie Brown and her helpers decided that the party should continue so served delicious paella and kicked on into Sunday evening. Now that’s the spirit!

BOOMERANG 2016
Owen Guest

The 2016 Boomerang is coming along well. We have 30 teams of 5/6 players each with representatives from AUS, France, Netherlands, the UK and the USA – it is going to be quite an event. I’m aiming to have the playing schedule out by the end of next week. Anyone who would like to play but hasn’t yet got in touch should do so, you can still enter the handicap doubles and I expect the odd place will become available in the Boomerang for one reason or another – so it is not too late.

Billets
Please contact either Gary Lee or Jon Hamer if you are able to offer a billet during January.

Staff
We are still looking for staff for the Boomerang. We are needing waiters for the Opening Cocktail Party on 11 January. We are paying $25 per hour. RSA qualifications well regarded. If you are interested then please phone Julie Baker (0412411624).

PARENT AND OFFSPRING
Nick Carr

Parent and Offspring Handicap Doubles

Sunday morning saw 5 pairs gather for an entertaining and good-spirited tournament. The pool games were uniformly close, notable for the high quality of play from the various offspring, complemented (in general) by judicious restraint from the senior representatives. Exceptions to this latter included Prue McCahey, who used her elegant and well-directed forehand from the hazard end to devastating effect, and Duncan Crockett, the only senior present who was actually the junior (in a handicap sense). Andrew Crockett elevated sportsmanship to a new level while defending chase 2 and 3, generously (or was that forgetfully?) hurtling after a ball shooting off the back wall past last gallery and neatly hitting it into the net, while Nick Carr came perilously close to cheating by playing left-handed, thus assuring some favourable handicaps.

It was the youth who really shone. Annie McAuley, as the highest handicapper playing, fought gamely, with Mike leaving plenty of balls for her to play. Dominic Emery played with flare and enthusiasm, while Julia McCahey dug out some great backhand returns.

The pool games left the Carrs and the McCaheys as the top two couples so, before a packed and eager gallery, the final began. The McCaheys raced to a 2 game lead, courtesy of some great play by Julia – and that cross court forehand of Prue’s. Nick Carr was demonstrating to the gallery that, as a general rule, if you fail to connect the ball with the racquet strings, the ball then fails to go over the net. A McCahey victory looked assured. Olivia Carr decided to pull out her railroad, producing some timely nick serves, and scampered around taking most of the shots, wisely leaving Nick to prod at only the occasional ball. These tactics were ultimately successful, and the Carrs ended up holding the silver.

Thanks to Julie Baker for organisation, food and for a really delicious fruit cake, and to Frank for all his hard work and marking.

Searching for a future World Champion

The RMTC Committee is commencing a search to find, recruit and develop a young professional who could be a future real tennis World Champion. This great Club has a strong history of developing high calibre real tennis players and professionals. Many of our gifted Australian players have risen to the highest level of the game and have served as skilled professionals in many Clubs throughout the world. The last three World Champions – Rob Fahey 1994-2014 (12), Wayne Davies 1987-1993 (4) and Chris Ronaldson 1981-1985 (3) – hail from Australia. We want this to continue.

Earlier this year our Club travelling tournament professional Nick Howell left to work at the National Tennis Club, Newport, Rhode Island. We encouraged him to follow his dream to improve his game to a level where he will hopefully be able to challenge for the World Championship. To keep the pipeline filled with potential champions, we need to start now in our search to find someone with the talent, discipline and desire to follow in the steps of Rob, Wayne and Chris. We expect that this may take some time, so we wanted to share our intent with you so that you may help in our search. If you think you’ve spotted a talented individual out there, please let us know!

SQUASH COMMITTEE
Greg Reid

The Spring 2015 squash season in the Club Circuit competition saw 5 teams playing out of RMTC, perhaps for the first time ever but certainly the first time in decades. RMTC was one of five founding members of the first squash pennant competition in Victoria in 1935 and now remains only one of two (the other RSYTC) in the competition, so a rich history. It was also a founding member of the Club Circuit competition which started in 1978.

The (almost) original team of Paul Scally, Wilson Lorimer and Mike Carroll which came across to play for RMTC in Spring of 2011 finished a respectable 6^th (out of 8) for the season, they were without their #1 player Wilson due to injury. Dave Kempster who joined the team this season improved rapidly throughout the season to finish with 7 wins, with Paul Scally and John Woods-Casey both with 6 wins. Mike Carroll and Leo Murphy both had some wins but not enough to get the team to finish higher. They could not get Rozza back onto the squash court to help them out this season, perhaps next season?
The second RMTC team who started playing in Spring 2014 finished third for the season, just losing a tight semi final. Matt Downey and Tom Frewin with 9 wins and Christian McGahey with 8 all had good seasons. Sam Bowman, Steve Cecil and Greg Reid need to lift their games a little more.

The three teams that have come across from the Grace Park Hawthorn Club this season, the B1 side finished third and are to play their semi final, Darcy Walsh with 10 wins was the standout with Sam Nash, Thomas Tyndall, Austen Diggle, Steve Cuff, Chye Lim and Sam Cantrell completing the team. The B3 side finished on top and go straight into the grand final, a strong all round team of Noel Fidock, Gaurav Gupta, Michael Gillett, Steve Fielding, Himanshu Sarin and Peter Stewart. The D1 side finished 4^th just missing the final going down in the last home and away round. Alistair Don and Andrew Williams both had 10 wins with Attila Hahn, Lee Eriera, Trevor Plumridge and Simon Walter in the team.

The next squash season commences around March 2016 and we are looking to field a further team, most likely to play home matches on a Tuesday or Wednesday night. Please let Wilson Lorimer (wlorimer@bigpond.com (mailto:wlorimer@bigpond.com) ) or Paul Scally (scallyp@bigpond.com (mailto:scallyp@bigpond.com) ) know of your interest and come on down for a hit. Teams need to go in by mid December, so let them know you are keen.

STAFF GRATUITY FUND 2015

Our Club is very fortunate to have loyal and dedicated staff who pride themselves on providing the highest level of service to members and their guests. The success and atmosphere of the club is no coincidence as it is perhaps the best and most enjoyable real tennis club in the world.

We urge all members to contemplate contributing to the annual Staff Gratuity Fund. The purpose of the fund is to enable members, who individually wish to do so, to show their appreciation for the efforts of the staff through the year.

This fund is the only source from which out staff can receive additional recognition from those who have enjoyed the Club.

Contributions can be made by emailing or telephoning our bookkeeper Helen admin@rmtc.com.au (mailto:admin@rmtc.com.au) or 9429 9009 or cash/cheque.

I hope you will be able to show your appreciation of their efforts by giving generously. You contribution will be much appreciated.

AUSTRALIAN MASTERS WEEKEND INCLUDING THE ARTA VETERANS

The weekend of 24/25 October saw the Club host the Australian Masters. The events consist of singles and doubles for Over 50s, 55s, 60s, 65s, 70s and 75s. These events are reasonably recent additions to the calendar to align with the International biennial competitions but significantly, include the long-standing ARTA Veterans (Over 55s).

While the weekend was well attended overall, unfortunately there were insufficient entries to hold the two 50s events and the 75s doubles.

All the events were played under championship conditions (best of three six-game sets) were hard fought and played to a high standard.

On Saturday night, Jonathan Hamer and Geof Fethers provided a magnificent four-course dinner for the players and partners which was well attended and thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Congratulations to the winners:

Five pairs of keen doubles players hit the courts on Sunday for the annual ladies Doubles Tournament in honour of Joan M Hayne.

The perpetual trophy is a beautiful engraved glass plate donated by David Hayne, in memory of his mother Joan who was a top squash player at the Exhibition Street court.

Most of the players were playing in the tournament for the their first time, and still learning the ropes of doubles play and complicated handicaps – while some seasoned doubles players such as Prue Atkins showed us how its done!

The final was a tight tussle – Jo See Tan and Kate Owens played Olivia Carr and Rose Blanden. After some long rallies, tight serving, lethal volleying and many changes of end! – Jo See and Kate managed to win 6/4.

We were all treated to a sumptuous lunch prepared by Julie Baker and we all helped the winners by assisting them to drink their champagne prize!

Thanks to Kate Leeming who organized the day with her usual calmness and aplomb.

The last Quarterly Medal of the year took place last Saturday. A full compliment of 20 players battled it out for the last 4 places up for grabs on Finals Day.

In the morning, debutantes Ben Craig and the fast improving Jo See Tan were the stand out performances. Ben eventually pipped Jo See to win the group.
In the other morning group Jeremy Hawkins was the stand out player winning his group comfortably.

Lunch and morning tea provided by Domain Cafe was very much appreciated on a beautiful Melbourne Day.

In the afternoon sessions, James Pittaway (a recently joined member from Morton Morell) was also a convincing and worthy winner winning all his matches.
The last but not least winner was Tony Bafunno who fought hard for his wins and on several occasions came from behind to win tight games.

The 4 winners will now join the other winners from throughout the year on Finals Day, 6th Dec, to decide who will be the 2015 Medal of Medallists Champion.

GRAND FINAL DOUBLES TOURNAMENT 3rd October 2015 REPORT

Grand Final tournament players and organisers, Fiona and Jasmine Hewson and Frankie Filippelli (behind the camera).

Grand Final morning started with the usual excitement, with Richmond buzzing as crowds of early risers made their way back from the MCG after securing their tickets for the much anticipated Hawthorn and Eagles Grand Final in the MCC members stand. At the RMTC the Hawthorn flag was flying proud above the bar and ginger bread was in the oven ready for the arrival of 10 keen players for a round of handicap doubles, including Carla Story, Edwina Collier , Michael MacAleavey, Kaye Frankcom, Gary Clarke and James Guest, complemented by the youthful Julia McCahey, Daf Camp, Jo See Tan and James Pittaway. I also enjoyed meeting James, Edwina and Dafydd for the first time. 5 pairs played four rounds of tennis before we saw the top 2 play off for the tennis Grand Final, a close match between James Pittaway/Kaye Frankcom and Jo See Tan/Daf who stole the match 6/5. Notable mentions must also go to James Guest and Gary Clarke who played really well all day and were unlucky to miss out on
a spot in the Grand Final. The Eagles won the tennis Grand Final (aka Jo See Tan/Daf), but thankfully that made way for Hawthorn to dominate over the road at the MCG, following the popular entertainment from Bryan Adams. Another year, another flag, congratulations to Cyril Rioli and James Pittaway on the Norm Smith Medal. Thank you to Jasmine Hewson for the gourmet lunch and of course Frankie Filippelli for his organisation skills and marking on the day, as well as all players who stayed to support the final and enjoy lunch in the sun.
