STAFF GRATUITY FUND 2016
Our Club is very fortunate to have loyal and dedicated staff who pride themselves on providing the highest level of service to members and their guests.  The success and atmosphere of the club is no coincidence as it is perhaps the best and most enjoyable real tennis club in the world.

We urge all members to contemplate contributing to the annual Staff Gratuity Fund.  The purpose of the fund is to enable members, who individually wish to do so, to show their appreciation for the efforts of the staff throughout the year.

This fund is the only source from which our staff can receive additional recognition from those who have enjoyed the Club.

Contributions can be made by emailing Helen in our office  at admin@rmtc.com.au or calling on 03 9429 9009 or by filling out the contributions form by clicking: <contributions form>

I hope you will be able to show your appreciation of their efforts by giving generously.  You contribution will be very much appreciated.

Feel Like Touring The USA In 2017?
The Australian under 26 team will be heading to the USA next year to compete in the biennial match against the USA for the Clothier Cup and the Limb Cup match vs the UK youth team.  The matches will be held in Boston 10-15 July.  Our players may also wish to take in the USA u23 and u26 Championships, July 7-9 in Philadelphia.  There will be opportunities to visit other clubs if desired.

ARTA is seeking expressions of interest from people who would like to be the team manager.  Key duties are to ensure the team gets to its appointed venues on time (not always easy!), help organise the trip in advance and provide advice and support to the team.  Occasional public speaking duties are also required.  The trip will be made at the manager’s own expense but our team and manager are billeted throughout their visit and you will be a guest at most (if not all) social functions.

Essential qualities include a good dose of patience, strong organisational skills, previous experience of visiting overseas tennis clubs and a decent understanding of the game.  If you’re interested, please contact ARTA Chair of Tennis Alistair Curley by 9 Dec on 0409 217 495.

TOURNAMENT REPORTS
President’s Cup

Champagne was flowing on Sunday afternoon following a close final set victory by Fiona Hewson and Peter Stanley to win the President’s Cup back from Hobart. After a 2 year drought the much fought after Cup is back in Melbourne’s trophy cabinet thanks to the following team: Annmaree Lester, Jo See Tan, Peter Stanley, Geoff Dempster, Paul Rosedale, Michelle O’Rorke, Kathryn Arndt, Greg Cornish, Annie Dempster, Roger Wood, Owen Guest, Fiona Hewson, Vince Scopelliti (Head of Tennis) and Fred Kininmonth (President).

Saturday’s play ended with Melbourne leading 12/8 sets. This may have had something to do with some minor handicapping by the RMTC president plying the more than wiling Hobart team with Pinot and Pinot Gris over a lovely lunch prepared by Paul Andrews. A ‘best on court performance’ by Paul Rosedale (4/4 wins) set up the overnight lead for RMTC. 17 of us adjourned to The Piano for a delicious Thai dinner, followed by muscat and cheese back in the RMTC club room. The secret muscat weapon proved the undoing of Graeme Bradfield (new ARTA president) who sweated it out with Fred Kininmonth before losing in the first match on Sunday morning – the pro’s must have enjoyed scheduling this early match!

With only 4 matches remaining sets were tied 14/14 and the pressure was on. Melbourne steadied to stave off a draw winning 17/15 of the 32 matches played. We all retired into the garden for a BBQ lunch prepared by Fred and his band of helpers. It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon to be shared with the fun Hobart team lead by president John Moores and his team: James Theodore, Tom McAuley, Andrew Brough, Michelle Moores, Graeme Bradfield, Christine Stirling, Paul Dunne and Annie Strange.

Thanks to the Hobart team for making their way to Melbourne and being such good fun and willing competitors. A special thanks to the Melbourne team for hosting a very entertaining weekend of tennis with a feeling of great camaraderie. Finally many thanks to Frank and his team for marking all of the matches and facilitating a smooth and entertaining tournament.

REAL TENNIS MAGAZINE

In September Real Tennis Magazine was launched (realtennismagazine.com). My goal in starting the magazine was to create a digital publication for the international real tennis community filling a void. Real Tennis Magazine will be published 10 time per year. Each issue will contain a profile of a player from the professional side of the game; it will also contain a video lesson with a professional, training & nutrition advice with Michael Cecchi who has worked as World Champion Camden Riviere’s personal trainer. Additionally, the magazine will highlight a club in each issue, it will have articles on amateurs (male, female, senior and juniors), an international tournament & fixtures schedule, professional photography from Michael Do and Tim Edwards are showcased, and it will have timely articles on issues and opportunities that impact our sport.

Previous issues have profiled Camden Riviere, Claire Fahey and Andrew Lyons. The magazine has had video lessons with Leon Smart, John Lumley and Camden. We have spoken with the Founder of Gold Leaf Athletics, the CEO of the IRTPA about the 2018 World Championship bid and the role of increased advertising and sponsorship for professionals, we went behind the scenes with the production company that produced the high quality streaming at the 2016 World Championship and much more. Our club profiles have included The Tennis & Racquet Club (Boston), Prested Hall Racquet Club (UK) and The National Tennis Club (Newport). In each issue we are working to broaden the content and welcome submissions and story ideas.

Personally I am an amateur player who like many of you loves the game and who is always looking to lower that handicap. The magazine is a supporter of the USCTA National League for the 2016-2017 Season, I am a member of the USCTA Handicap & Ranking Committee and a member of The National Tennis Club. Our subscription price is $60.00 (USD) annually. I hope that you will take a few moments to check out our website and consider signing up for the magazine. The publication is digital but it is also available to print and download as a PDF.

If you have any questions or ideas for content, please feel free to contact me. Follow us on Facebook as Real Tennis Magazine and Instagram @RealTennisMagazine.

Play Well!

TOURNAMENT REPORTS

The doubles pairings were quite varied in age as well as people who normally don’t play together; there was a father and son team, the shamateur (fast improver) and the rock solid 2015 Richmond Silver Racket winner taking on one of the Over 70’s Masters doubles teams. Even with all the different players on court the handicap differences weren’t that large with no serve restrictions or ban tambours to be seen. Therefore the full range of different styles of tennis were displayed without the better players having to restrict themselves too much to make up for the sheer amount of points required to win large handicap differences.

Despite a lack of sleep and a terrible start, being comprehensively beaten 6/1 by Paul and Dan Williams, Paul Rosedale and Jo See Tan managed to recover and not lose another match till 5 all, 40 all in the final. The victors were Graeme Holloway and John Faull who fought hard in the final and found weaknesses in a couple of crucial points.

The day was busy with a number of teams playing 3 or 4 matches back to back first to 6 game sets. Jo See Tan and the social committee took care of lunch which was amazing after playing so many matches, so thank you to her.

Paul Rosedale

The RMTC committee is enthusiastically supporting a professional survey of real tennis injuries, initiated in Melbourne, but which will be provided to players from Melbourne, Ballarat and Hobart clubs. As far as we are aware, no such survey has ever been done before. The survey, being run by a group of specialist sports injury physiotherapists at LaTrobe University, if successful, could lead to improved approaches to injury prevention and treatment, or even to trials for treatment processes. The names, contact details and backgrounds of the physios involved are listed on the survey forms. If you have any questions you can contact either them or the liaison person (tennis player from RMTC), also listed on the form.

The survey is available from the club pros as a paper document, or can be done online at the website shown below. Since the aim is to determine the frequency of different types of injury, it is important for all players, injured or not, to fill in the form. Players with no injuries (if there are any!) can fill in the form in a couple of minutes maximum, while players with lots of injuries may need 5-10 minutes. Note that the information gathered will be anonymous, so no linkage to individuals. The club encourages all members to complete the survey, which will be available at the beginning of November and run over a month or so. If you can, the web version is preferred as the data is then automatically recorded, rather than having to be translated from a handwritten document.

If successful, the results may well be published in a scientific journal, and made available to clubs all over the world, and of course to all our members. Similarly, if there are eventually outcomes to improve prevention or treatment, these will also be shared with all clubs in the world.

Bring your abacus to the pro shop and have a squizz at the list of players by handicap and work out your best combination.

TOURNAMENT RESULTS

Platinum Handicap Doubles – Saturday 22 Oct
It was my pleasure to play in the RMTC inaugural Platinum doubles handicap tournament (for those with handicap of 70+) on Saturday 22 October. Ten of us ‘newbies’ to this wonderful game fronted up for 4 round-robin matches that were played to a time limit of 25 min, with handicaps that to some of us were inscrutable with the need to ‘owe’ and ‘receive’ points, even before a ball was hit. Many of us were called on to mark the games of others, which was an added challenge for some (referring to myself in particular).

All games were played in a friendly, supportive spirit though everyone was still competitive. We all appreciate that learning the intricacies of the game can take many years and, as new players, we have a long way to go. Tournaments like this are much appreciated as a means for us to meet other players of similar standard and experience that will hopefully lead to new playing partners. We all thanked the club for organising the tournament, Vince for being there to present the trophies and Frank for chaperoning us and being so encouraging all the way through.

My doubles partner (Tim Raw) and I were fortunate to win through to the final where we played Mark Hillebrand and Peter Lumley against whom we had a real tussle in the earlier match. Tim and I were the victors on the day and took home a beautifully engraved wine glass each. However, we were all victors on the day with the experience of competition on the court and friendships forged over lunch (again, thanks to the club). The downside to winning a tournament, I have been assured, is that our handicap advantage now will be significantly weakened.  Onward and downward!
