Tournament Reports

Internationality Handicap Doubles – Sunday 11 September
The club house was buzzing early last Sunday morning as final preparations were made to kick off one of the most anticipated social tournaments of the year. After a stunning breakfast, the Internationality Handicap Doubles tournament, hosted by the Mackinnon family in honour of their late Father, got under way.

While the on-court performance was important, there was just as much emphasis on the costumes with flags proudly worn. Kilts offered the mobility for the Scots to make the final and caution was thrown into the wind by the team representing Alaska with a grandiose fur coat/hat combination being matched by some royal tennis racket snow shoes – that apparently don’t quite work so well on stairs. Despite this impracticality the overall outfit was awarded the Best Dressed medal for the day.

Food continued to be a consistent theme as an international array of dishes were served for lunch to feed competitors that had fought it out across both courts all morning for the right to play in the finals. Spirits were high and crowds grew from match to match adding extra pressure and excitement, leading to the final show down between Germany and Scotland. It was a day for the newcomers to battle it out as half of the Scottish duo were only making their 4th court appearance before the competition but German efficiency prevailed for the win.

It was a great pleasure for Charlie Hooper and I to lift the trophy and on behalf of all players and spectators I thank the Mackinnon family for a day filled with great tennis, amazing food, drinks and as always, a lot of socialising.

Tournament Reports

Australian Amateur Singles – 2-4 Sept
A small field of four battled for the 2016 Australian Amateur Singles title comprising three Hobartians (two of whom we have now claimed as our own) and one Sydney-sider. The first match was played on Friday night in front of a reasonable crowd, admittedly mostly there for the happy hour bar prices, who enjoyed a good match between Graeme Blundstone and Hugo Pinsent with Pinsent extracting an unlikely 3/0 win. He took the first set in a very close 6/5 and never looked back, Blundstone seemed to regain form at the start of the 3rd but Pinsent quickly took control to take the match 6/5 6/1 6/1.

After his stunning victory, Pinsent’s next opponent in the semi-final on Saturday for a place in the final was Pete Boyles who had made the trek from Hobart specially for the occasion. Boyles had arrived Friday and only managed one hit before the game on Saturday so was still getting accustomed to the court and had a slow start. This allowed Pinsent, who started the weekend more than 10 handicap points behind Boyles, to get some confidence and get a start in the game. With Boyles making a few errors and playing some loose shots around the court, Pinsent began to take advantage and even up the game. The two traded sets in the first four sets leading to a very exciting fifth set that seemed destined to go to 5/5 from the start. At deuce the difference in class finally came through with Boyles putting in two very solid points to take the match 4/6 6/3 6/4 3/6 6/5 in 3 hours.

Having now got a solid block of time on court and a good 24 hours of recovery Boyles returned to the court at 3pm on Sunday in the final against Kieran Booth. A good start and a more positive approach served Boyles well in the first set pushing Booth to play at a higher level which he duly did. After the first set Booth’s extra control and pressure proved too much for Boyles and Booth took the title 6/4 6/2 6/3. A very good result for Boyles considering that five weeks before the pair also contested the Victorian Open final and Boyles managed one game in two sets.

Overall a very good tournament with close games. Congratulations particularly to Hugo Pinsent who played well above his appointed handicap for the whole weekend. Thanks also to Vince Scopelliti for representing the committee and making the presentations.
