Eureka and Larwood Cups (RMTC vs BTC) – Sunday 28 Aug
Last Sunday saw RMTC host the annual Eureka (men’s) and Larwood (women’s) Cups played between RMTC vs BTC. It was a wonderful day that provided some great tennis, good food and plenty of entertainment and of course lots of fun. BTC put together a strong team including a number of past presidents.
In the men’s event the final outcome was only decided in the last game. BTC took the early honours when Mark Hartnell won the only singles match with a close win over RMTC young pro, John Woods-Casey 8/6. Chris Blanden and Geoff Dempster then squared the ledger with an 8/5 win over Rod Unmack and Tim Raw. Some very tight games followed with some great tennis. BTC however took the ascendancy 5 sets to 2 with Bruce Christie and Nathan Baker putting in some solid performances. RMTC however had not thrown in the towel and a late fight back saw RMTC close the gap to 5/4 leading up to the final men’s set. The BTC team led by Rod Unmack and Andrew Rowan played some good steady tennis in the final game to beat Sam Bowman and Ken Penaluna 8/2 to retain the Eureka Cup once again. Well done to Chris Blanden for RMTC for playing in 3 out of 4 winning sets and congratulations to BTC for retaining the Eureka Cup 6/4.
In the women’s some late withdrawals in the RMTC Team saw pro Kate Leeming line up in the ladies team from time to time and Committee member Kathryn Arndt make a successful entry into the mixed doubles in the men’s draw. Jo See Tan and Annmaree Lester got the women’s team off to a great start with a very close win over Wendy Whitehead and Stephanie Williams 8/7. Jo Edwards and Cathy Faull then squared things up beating Leeming and Arndt 8/6. BTC then took a 2/1 lead when Michelle Hoskin and Laura LeMarshall beat Yvonne Rout and Michelle O’Rorke 8/6. Tanya Baker and Sarah Bartlett then lost to Sarah Butler and Judy Collins 2/8. Whitehead and Edwards lost to Kate Leeming and Jo See Tan 8/6. Stephanie Williams and Cathy Faull lost to Annmarie Lester and Kathryn Arndt 2/8; Laura LeMarshall and Sarah Bartlett lost to Michelle O’Rorke and Judy Collins 3/8; Michele Hoskin and Tanya Baker beat Yvonne Rout and Sarah Butler 8/2.
At this stage of the afternoon RMTC was leading 5 seats to 3 so BTC needed the next game to challenge in the last. We then saw a terrific game of doubles tennis with Jo See Tan and Kathryn Arndt just managing to squeeze past the very determined pair of Wendy Whitehead and Cathy Faull winning 8/7. That gave RMTC an unassailable lead going into the last match which was won by Jo Edwards and Laura LeMarshall beating Annmaree Lester and Michelle O’Rorke. It was a nail biting end to a terrific day’s play. Congratulations to RMTC in winning back the Larwood Cup 6/4.
New BTC Head Pro Paul Tabley dropped in to observe his new charges and see how much work he has to do to get them ready for next year’s events. I am sure he was very happy with what he saw. Thanks also to the terrific work done by all the pros, Frank, Kate, Jonathan and John in arranging this event, well done. The lunch and food arranged by Paul Andrews and prepared by Fred Kininmonth, along with his team of helpers, was also a treat and was enjoyed by everyone. It was also great to have the president of the RMTC to support and make presentations. Unfortunately Mr Tabley was so confident of BTC retaining both trophies that he failed to bring them with him from Ballarat! Alas the new rivalry begins.
