Eureka and Larwood Cups (RMTC vs BTC) – Sunday 28 Aug
Last Sunday saw RMTC host the annual Eureka (men’s) and Larwood (women’s) Cups played between RMTC vs BTC. It was a wonderful day that provided some great tennis, good food and plenty of entertainment and of course lots of fun. BTC put together a strong team including a number of past presidents.

In the men’s event the final outcome was only decided in the last game. BTC took the early honours when Mark Hartnell won the only singles match with a close win over RMTC young pro, John Woods-Casey 8/6. Chris Blanden and Geoff Dempster then squared the ledger with an 8/5 win over Rod Unmack and Tim Raw. Some very tight games followed with some great tennis. BTC however took the ascendancy 5 sets to 2 with Bruce Christie and Nathan Baker putting in some solid performances. RMTC however had not thrown in the towel and a late fight back saw RMTC close the gap to 5/4 leading up to the final men’s set. The BTC team led by Rod Unmack and Andrew Rowan played some good steady tennis in the final game to beat Sam Bowman and Ken Penaluna 8/2 to retain the Eureka Cup once again. Well done to Chris Blanden for RMTC for playing in 3 out of 4 winning sets and congratulations to BTC for retaining the Eureka Cup 6/4.

In the women’s some late withdrawals in the RMTC Team saw pro Kate Leeming line up in the ladies team from time to time and Committee member Kathryn Arndt make a successful entry into the mixed doubles in the men’s draw. Jo See Tan and Annmaree Lester got the women’s team off to a great start with a very close win over Wendy Whitehead and Stephanie Williams 8/7. Jo Edwards and Cathy Faull then squared things up beating Leeming and Arndt 8/6. BTC then took a 2/1 lead when Michelle Hoskin and Laura LeMarshall beat Yvonne Rout and Michelle O’Rorke 8/6. Tanya Baker and Sarah Bartlett then lost to Sarah Butler and Judy Collins 2/8. Whitehead and Edwards lost to Kate Leeming and Jo See Tan 8/6. Stephanie Williams and Cathy Faull lost to Annmarie Lester and Kathryn Arndt 2/8; Laura LeMarshall and Sarah Bartlett lost to Michelle O’Rorke and Judy Collins 3/8; Michele Hoskin and Tanya Baker beat Yvonne Rout and Sarah Butler 8/2.

At this stage of the afternoon RMTC was leading 5 seats to 3 so BTC needed the next game to challenge in the last. We then saw a terrific game of doubles tennis with Jo See Tan and Kathryn Arndt just managing to squeeze past the very determined pair of Wendy Whitehead and Cathy Faull winning 8/7.  That gave RMTC an unassailable lead going into the last match which was won by Jo Edwards and Laura LeMarshall beating Annmaree Lester and Michelle O’Rorke. It was a nail biting end to a terrific day’s play. Congratulations to RMTC in winning back the Larwood Cup 6/4.

New BTC Head Pro Paul Tabley dropped in to observe his new charges and see how much work he has to do to get them ready for next year’s events. I am sure he was very happy with what he saw. Thanks also to the terrific work done by all the pros, Frank, Kate, Jonathan and John in arranging this event, well done. The lunch and food arranged by Paul Andrews and prepared by Fred Kininmonth, along with his team of helpers, was also a treat and was enjoyed by everyone. It was also great to have the president of the RMTC to support and make presentations. Unfortunately Mr Tabley was so confident of BTC retaining both trophies that he failed to bring them with him from Ballarat! Alas the new rivalry begins.

Tournament Reports

Richmond Silver Racket – Sat-Sun 20-21 Aug
With many of the Club’s top players out of action for various reasons, a small field of 5 players took to the court to compete for the Club’s under-20 handicap tournament, the Richmond Silver Racket for 2016. In the first round Head Professional Frank Filippelli started well to take a 5/3 lead in the first set before the handicap and niggling shoulder and elbow issues took their toll and Hugo Pinsent clawed his way back to a 6/5 6/3 victory.

Following this match, two of the Club’s A Grade competition regulars took the court vying for a spot in the final. As Kieran Booth remarked after the tournament, last year he bowed out in the first round leaving blood on the court but this year it was his opponent who suffered that fate. Graeme Blundstone fought valiantly but was overcome by the superior strength and control of Booth who was able to control the handicap and the match. With Pinsent backing up from his earlier match straight into the second semi-final, it was always going to be a difficult task coming up against our fresh Assistant Professional John Woods-Casey and the back-to-back matches proved to be a bridge too far with Woods-Casey starting well and not looking back.

The final between Booth and Woods-Casey was a long affair, with the spectators enthralled in the three set match for over two hours. In that time many giraffes were served by Booth, to varying levels of success, most of which tied Woods-Casey down enough for the significantly stronger player to control the game to the extent required by the 30/owe-30 handicap. After a close first set was narrowly won by the weaker player, Booth improved his game with fewer faults and better length on his serves and much improved grille shooting and ran away with the match 5/6 6/2 6/3.

Congratulations to all entrants and many thanks to those who came to watch over the weekend including our President who was on hand to present the trophies.

C Special Club Championships Final
The first Club Championship final for 2016 has been played in the C Special grade. James Wheeler and Gerald O’Byrne took two weeks to complete the final with the first set taking up the whole first hour booked with Wheeler finally taking it 6/5 after an immense final game with many deuces and good chases won and defended. On the return the following week it was again Wheeler who was able to emerge victorious taking the second set and the C Special Club Championship 6/5 6/3.

Tournament Reports

North African Tournament – Saturday 13 August
The RMTC North African Tournament and Feast celebrate the true origins of our wonderful sport. The tournament was played with great gusto. Clever but steady play was used to gain Farouks, and then in combination with the Gaddafi Adaptor, this saw many favoured pairs fail. There was a Syrian Decider play-off for the runner up in the Upper Nile pool. The final was very close. Michelle O’Rorke and Julie Davies, having a substantial handicap and having gained the Farouk, missed out on at least two key Farouking opportunities. This allowed Quentin Clark and Lizzie Brown to hold on for a 6/5 win. Quentin Clark played careful considered tennis, Lizzie Brown played in her own imaginative and inimitable style.

The feast was a triumph. The club was magnificently decorated. The slow cooked goat was sublime, with the succulent meat falling off the bone. The cheese was very special. Fatima, the club’s appointed belly dancer, performed to the great delight of all present.  North African tennis royalty was acknowledged. Players were reminded that the rules had been translated from a papyrus found in the tomb of the great pharaoh Tutentabley. Queen Leemingkatie was there to present the prizes. The best dressed (female) prize was awarded to Isabelle Graham, and the best dressed male was David Derham. Various aspects of the North African legacy we enjoy today were pointed out, in particular when we call a chase worse than eight yards.

There was discussion about improvement to the rules. The Gaddafi adaptor has the capacity to confuse many, and perhaps it would be easier simply to adjust the handicap by 6 points, when a side is 4 games down, however to do this would mean the loss of unusual  handicaps such as Owe ¼ 15, Receive ¾ 15. It was noted that the rules relating to the use of the Farouk when there were two chases needed to be tightened up.
It was also noted that the tournament was first played in 1997 – so that next year, 2017,  will be the 20th anniversary – and worthy of a grand party.

Many, many thanks and congratulations to Lizzie Brown – tournament director, party maker, club decorator, chef, enthusiast, and winner – & all who helped. Particular thanks to Dianne Rennard and Philip Barker, who, as always, worked tirelessly to make it happen.

Jonathan Sear

Victorian Open Singles & Doubles
The recent Victorian Open demonstrated the great pool of talent in real tennis in Australia. While titled the Victorian Open, it was great to have some of Hobart’s best players travel to Melbourne to play in the two events. The players didn’t disappoint, overall the weekend was categorised by fantastic tennis that was at a consistently high level over the three days. A few familiar professionals also entered the tournament and showed their skills.

Many members would have been very happy to watch the ever dominant Kieran Booth. He exhibited just why he is one of the world’s best winning both the singles and the doubles. Good luck at the French Open Kieran.

Thanks to the pros for organising and marking another good weekend.

Tournament Reports
RMTC vs MCCRTS – Sunday 24th July
22 players (including Professional staff Kate Leeming and John Woods-Casey) came together on Sunday to meet in battle for the ‘at home’ match between RMTC and the MCCRTS.

This tournament, which is held twice a year, has now been running for a number of years and is a reflection of the strong partnership established between RMTC and MCCRTS a number of years ago for the purpose of encouraging and facilitating players into the game of Real Tennis. It is also an opportunity for RMTC to display our Club’s wonderful facilities.

Of the 22 players, a number came from complimentary racquet ball backgrounds such as lawn tennis, badminton and squash (the later making the use of walls look easy – unfortunately for some of us with only a tennis background).

In the highly competitive and tightly fought battle, the two teams went into the final match of the day head to head at 8 matches all. The final match, played by Russel Howcroft and Jo See Tan (RMTC) against Matt Downey and Calum Munro (MCCRTS) resulted in a decisive victory in favour of MCCRTS (9/2). It was great to see the quality of tennis being played by all players, in particular Jo See and Matt – both relatively new members to the Club and both coming from squash. Calum’s badminton background and keen volleying skills secured the final win. Russel displayed his usual enthusiasm for the game, having rushed back from meetings for most of the day just to play this final match.

Thank you to Julia McCahey for organising lunch supplies which were then prepared by Jo See – with the role of supervising the heating of the quiches delegated to Andrew Gould as Jo See and I took to court for the pre lunch midday match.

The break for lunch at 12.30pm allowed for relaxed and enjoyable conversation before the afternoon battle began.

Thanks to Tabs, Kate and John for marking the day’s matches. Special thanks to Tabs for his mercy coffee pod supply run to Aldi – much to the relief of some of those players who arrived feeling somewhat worse for wear due to Saturday evening frivolities.

Kathryn Arndt

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Robert Kininmonth
Congratulations to Tabs!

The big news is that Tabs has accepted the role as head professional at Ballarat Tennis Club. The committee and all members of the RMTC will miss Paul dearly. His energy around the Club is contagious and his lessons are legendary for improving your game while having a damn good time doing it.

Paul began his career at RMTC as a 16 year old in 1980. He quickly showed his prowess on court and developed that cheeky nature that has endeared him to the tennis community the world over. He has enjoyed working over the years in Hobart, Holyport, Sydney and as well as helping in many other Clubs. This has been his third stint at RMTC having returned to the Club 8 years ago simply to help with the Boomerang – he chose to stay on which was to our benefit.

Now Tabs has the opportunity to assist our friends in Ballarat. He’ll do a fabulous job I’m sure. His last day is officially 1st August. So please take a moment to drop in and wish him well. I also encourage you to organise a visit to Ballarat to play tennis – and now have the pleasure of spending time with Tabs.

A few of us will gather on Friday 5th August at the Club (first Friday of the Month) to pop a champagne cork to wish him farewell. Join us if you can!

Cheers! Fred

DIRECT DEBIT FORMS FOR PAYING YOUR RMTC ACCOUNT.

It is easy to forget to pay your account on time, so to minimize the hassle and the late penalty charges, fill out a direct debit form and it will be debited from your bank account on approximately the 20 day of each month, plenty of time to check your statement before it is paid. Forms are available from the pro or admin office, or a form can be emailed to you on request.  The members who have applied for this facility are extremely happy with this method to pay their accounts.

Tournament Results
Christmas in July Mixed Handicap Doubles 2016
A very solid turnout of 10 pairs were on hand to play the 2016 Christmas in July Mixed Doubles. For some it was their first tournament and possibly even first doubles matches and every match was played in good, competitive spirit. For some the marking of matches was more stressful than the playing but with a bit of help and good will from all, the day was a great success. Embodying the close games all day, Sam Bowman and Jo See Tan defeated Peter Fenwick and Kate Paton 3/2 in the final.

Special mentions go to semi-finalists Carol Miller and Vince Stefano, and Robert Falconer and Michelle O’Rorke who won all of their pool matches only to stumble in the semi-finals. Also congratulations and many thanks to Fiona Hewson and her team of helpers for organising such a fun and successful tournament including a sumptuous roast lunch.

See you on court

A NOTE FROM THE KITCHEN
Evie Coutts

As many at the Club may be aware, my mum has been very ill these past 3 months, resulting in her having her left arm amputated below the elbow, due to inoperable cancer. It has been a very traumatic, and difficult time for us. Mum is now recovering, and doing well, despite the long road ahead.

I would just like to say a big thank you to the Club, and the members who have been extremely supportive, kind and helpful during this time. I apologise for the disruption to the kitchen the last few weeks, and I am very grateful for everyone’s patience, while I continue to care for mum.

Thank you
Evie Coutts
