World Championship Action – Live
Paul Andrews
The battle for the 2016 World Championship between Rob Fahey and Camden Riviere is being streamed on the big screen at the Club as you read this (probably):

Day 1 – Wednesday 18 May, 7.30am AEST
Day 2 – Friday 20 May, 7.30am AEST
Day 3 – Sunday 22 May, 9am (play starts at 3am….)

A replay of the action will also be screened on continuous loop at the Club throughout the day. Why not sign up to the Empire Day Tournament and enjoy morning handicap doubles tennis and hearty breakfast while you also watch the action live from Newport. Or round up some friends and watch the replay on Wednesday or Friday evenings in the bar.

UPDATE (Spoiler alert):
Riviere leads Fahey by 3 sets to 1 after the first day, 6/4 6/3 6/2 4/6

Junior Clinic (U16) – Sunday 22nd May
We still have a few spots available in the junior clinic at 4PM this weekend, bring any interested (or not so interested) young people down to the Club and let us introduce them to our game; we will play games and make merriment for the afternoon and hopefully they’ll enjoy it enough to want to come back under their own steam!

Tournament Reports

Australian Amateur Womens Singles and Doubles & Judith Clarke Cup
This weekend saw a busy two days of women’s tennis. The Australian Womens Amateur championships and Judith Clarke Cup were contested by an enthusiastic group of players. Rose Snell defeated Jo Edwards to claim the singles title then paired with Euanna Varigos to defeat Jo and a rapidly improving Jo See Tan in the doubles. The competition also included some closely fought graded matches ensuring lots of tennis for players of all standards.

The Judith Clarke Cup is the annual competition between Hobart and Melbourne women, with a small group of Julianne Drewwitt, Sally Crosby and Michelle Moores travelling from Hobart, joined by Ballarat based HRTC member Annie Strange putting in a strong performance to regain the trophy by winning four rubbers to two. Had I not served a double fault at 5 all advantage all it may have been a different outcome. I think I might owe the Melbourne ladies a drink!

The Hobart players brought an enthusiastic support team, which added to the atmosphere. Casual lunches both days and a relaxed dinner at The Piano Bar in Bridge road provided a great social side to the carnival, and we were priveledged to have Judith Clarke herself in the gallery during the competition. It was also nice to see a third generation real tennis player (Georgie Brand) taking part – and winning her doubles – reinforcing the wonderful traditional side of our game.

Aus Am Results
Singles
R Snell d J Edwards 6/1 6/3
B Grade: J S Tan d K Arndt 6/5 6/3
C Grade: M O’Rorke d J McCahey 6/5 6/4

Doubles

Julian Snow
The Ted Cockram Trophy (international amateur team event for Over 50s, with ties of 3 singles matches and 2 doubles matches) will next take place in Melbourne from 21 – 23 January 2017.

I have been appointed to captain the Australian team. If you are of the appropriate age (date of birth 1 January 1958 – 31 December 1967 inclusive) and standard (handicap <25) and would like to be considered for selection, please email me at snow@vicbar.com.au at your earliest convenience.

Tournament Reports

Exhibition St Cup
There were some positive features to report. Mirabile dictu there was food available for the players on the Saturday, as well as an improved players’ lunch on the Sunday (well done PA – keep up the good work). I discovered a live garden slug within my salad, which ‘proves it was fresh’ according to Paul. The venerable (now 78yo) James Guest won two matches on the Saturday, both by a score of 9/6 against competitive opponents, yet retained sufficient puff to provide a comprehensive de-brief of his winning strategies to anyone within earshot. Julia McCahey excelled to win three matches over the week-end, notably a 9/6 win over 10 handicap Paul Rosedale, but, from 12 handicap points over the maximum difference of 50 that the singles calculator caters for, was inevitably fighting a losing battle in the final which I won 9/3.

There was also some doubles played (for a real trophy, generously presented some years ago by Josef Brunhuber to mark the fantastic day in 2007 when he carried Peter Estcourt to victory). This year the winners were Vince Scopelliti and Jackson Brand.

Match Report – Saskia’s Goodbye Party
On behalf of all present last Friday, a massive thank you to Lizzie Brown and Frank Filippelli for cooking up a Dutch feast to celebrate Saskia Bollerman’s time at The Royal Melbourne Tennis Club. Before the party kicked off, Julian Snow displayed glimpses of fine tennis from his younger days to narrowly beat Saskia in the Christa Abdallah Trophy – a trophy for ‘an occasional tennis match between a man and a woman’. We wish Saskia all the best for her studies back in Holland and we look forward to seeing her warm smile back in Melbourne in the not too distant future.

Tournament Reports

ANZAC Day Trophy
The ANZAC Day Trophy tournament was played on Saturday, with 12 players turning out for a knockout singles and doubles event.

Notable mentions were Sam Bowman who won his way through to the singles final, with comfortable wins against James Guest and Michelle O’Rorke on his way through, whilst on the other side of the draw it was Ken Penaluna who made his way to the final. The singles final was very close, with Sam racing ahead to a 5-1 lead, before Ken woke up and came back to win 6/5.

Great tennis was played by Kate Paton and Julia McCahey making a winning combination in the doubles all the way to the final, against Ken Penaluna and Robin McAllen. It was Ken and Robin who proved too strong for Kate and Julia, winning the doubles 6/5.

PRESIDENT
Robert Kininmonth

We have been blessed with the company of Saskia Bollerman in our Pro Shop since November last year. Alas, she leaves us this Friday. Members will miss her welcoming smile, friendly conversation and engaging interest in what we’re up to. In addition, our pro team will miss Saskia’s quickly learnt skills tying balls, booking courts and jumping on court with members.

Saskia joined us as part of a gap year and is returning to university in Holland. Her aim was to reduce her handicap. She has done more than that. In six months Saskia has reduced her handicap from 46 to 29, earned the #8 world ranking in women’s tennis and won the Australian Open Doubles with world #1 Claire Fahey. Congratulations Saskia!

A special thank you to the Happell family for hosting Saskia during her time at the Club. Mike, Tatty and their daughters Edwina, Bella and Josephine have been like a second family to Saskia, so we sincerely thank them for the care and superb hospitality they have provided Saskia during her 6 months in Australia.

Our thanks are extended to Hugo Van der Meer – our first “gappy” from Holland – Hugo had a wonderful time here last year and encouraged Saskia to make the move. Also to the Bollerman family, her parents Theo and Lucie who have raised a wonderful daughter and her brother Paul, who refuses to let Saskia beat him in real tennis hence drives her competitive spirit. I think Paul’s work is cut out for him now! They have visited here for the last two years to play in the Roo Trophy and Boomerang Cup, bringing with them more Dutch players and loads of fun. We certainly look forward to welcoming Saskia and her family and friends back here soon. Well, she’ll have to return to defend her Australian Open Doubles title at the very least!

Robert Kininmonth – President

Tournament Reports
MCCRTS vs RMTC at Romsey
22 players of all levels turned out to play potentially the last day of tennis on the court at Romsey with the court to be transformed into an art gallery for at least the next 4-5 years. The match was very close with the MCCRTS eventually winning the day 6/5. All of the games were played in good spirit and almost all of the games were very close, the final set score being 51/49 to the MCCRTS.

MCC started off the morning well taking the first two rubbers in quick fashion and subsequently took a 4/2 lead into the lunch break winning two very tight 6/5 sets. The sandwiches and fruit cake on offer at lunch appeared to reinvigorate the RMTC team as they won two of the first three sets to stay in touch but the team of Robert Falconer and Annie Strange were too strong for the MCC and confidently took them to victory on the day.

Notable highlights for the day were Dafydd Camp and Simon Walliss coming back from being comprehensively beaten in their first set 6/1 and both winning their second sets (including many spectacular dives across the court from Dafydd), Jo See Tan playing the volley of her life taking the ball out of Last Gallery and planting it firmly at the base of the tambour, and Greg Reid and Stuart Strange finally winning their first match as a doubles pair. Many thanks to Gordon Cope-Williams for providing the court and organising lunch, we wish him all the best with the coming exhibitions and the new direction the court is taking.

Billing and fee/statement FAQ:
What is a rebooking fee?

The rebooking fee applies when a member cancels their game or court less than 48 hours before the time. This is to cover the cost of the time taken by the professionals to organise a replacement for the game, if the member cancels only their half of the game, or to replace revenue lost to the Club, if the whole court is cancelled.

Why do I get two charges on my statement when I have a lesson?

When you have a lesson with one of the professionals, the billing system the Club uses separates the court fee and the professional’s fee meaning that on your statement there will be two charges for the same day.

Finally, new safety glasses have been purchased for use by members. 4 pairs have been placed by each court and are recommended to all players for ocular protection.

Tournament Reports
Gerald Patterson Cup returns to RMTC
The Gerald Patterson is a tournament played between RMTC and RSYLTC involving real tennis in the morning and lawn tennis in the afternoon, with lunch at RMTC and a dinner at RSYLTC.
This year it was played on Saturday 19 March and was won by RMTC defeating RSYLTC 16 sets to 2.
The usual good start to RMTC playing real tennis was delivered with 8 sets won and one set lost before the trout were served.
The real tennis was played without handicaps except that a bisque was given each time a doubles pair lost a game when behind. This assisted RSYLTC in getting 35 games against RMTC’s 53 games.
However, this year, unlike all previous years, the lawn players were out played in the afternoon. RSYLTC won only 1 set in the 9 “lawn” sets played. This is the first time that the lawn players have not followed lunch with a complete thumping (no bisques on offer for lawn!). Perhaps it was because we played on the en tout cas courts … rain prevented use of the lawn courts.
Other factors may also have been in play. Ill health sidelined one of the real players 90 minutes before the start of play on Saturday. The quick thinking Frank (Filippelli) suggested Saskia Bollerman might play. She did. Saskia and Paul Wheeler were the most successful lawn pair (equal top in sets won, won the most games and lost the fewest) AND Saskia and Ross Macaw were the most successful real pair (equal top in sets won, equal top in number of games won and lost the fewest).
Jonathan Harris, Captain of Lawn, excelled with his selection and provision of Chablis, Chardonnay, Shiraz and Cabernet with which the two teams were able to replay the tournament over dinner. A most enjoyable day.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Robert Kininmonth

I am pleased to announce the following changes to the RMTC Committee.

Vince Scopelliti has joined the committee, and will be chairing the Tennis sub-committee. Jonathan Hamer has been chairing
Tennis for the last year, and we thank him for his leadership in that arena.

Paul Andrews has joined the committee and will chair Social sub-committee. Julie Baker has been in charge of Social since 2013
(and several previous stints!), and we thank her for her tireless efforts.

Julie Baker will take on the chair of Membership sub-committee, relieving Kathryn Arndt, who has been in the role for the last
year and remains as Honorary Secretary.

I’m sure you will join me in thanking the new committee members, and thanking their predecessors for their contributions.

Fred Kininmonth
