TENNIS COMMITTEE
Greg Reid

RMTC vs. MCCRTS Sunday 26^th July 2015.

This is an inter-club competition that is growing in strength and numbers participating including committee members from both clubs, 25 players donning the whites to compete for their respective clubs. Now into its fifth year, on a combined home and away aggregate, MCCRTS goes 4 / 1 up. Handicap doubles, 8 game sets, boomerang cup format.

RMTC had Kathryn Arndt, Ian Bull, Geoff Dempster, Robert Falconer, Dick Friend, James Guest, Peter Lumley, Michael MacAleavey, Greg Moran, Alasdair Norton, Roland Scollay, Rosie Snell, Vince Scopelliti and Peter Stanley to take on the MCCRTS players of Josef Brunhuber, Matt Downey, Chris Nobes, Ken Penaluma, Greg Reid, Yvonne Rout, Jo See Tan, Henry Turnbull, Wendy Whitehead, Steve Wood and John Woods-Casey. With a wide range of handicaps from mid 20 to mid 70’s, there was ample scope to have most matches played with only small handicap differences.

RMTC started the day well winning the first match, after that MCCRTS dominated the morning going into the long lunch break 9 matches to 3 up. There is some conjecture whether the delicious lasagne or the red wine inspired RMTC players or dulled MCCRTS, but RMTC came back after the break winning 5 of the next 6 matches to be 10/8 behind with the last two rubbers to play. It proved to be an anti-climax with MCCRTS winning both comfortably finishing 12 rubbers to 8.

It was great to see newer members from both clubs playing and getting to know fellow members. Many thanks to the team of Frank, Jonners, Kate and JWC providing the marking duties all day and Evie for the lunch fare.

Farouk, farouk!! It is almost that time of year to don your fez and prepare for the North African Tournament, a round robin handicap doubles tournament happening on Saturday 15th August and followed by a magnificent Arabian nights extravaganza featuring a North African feast, fabulous belly dancer/ing and ‘sheiking’ music. Sign up sheets for both events are in the club.
P.S. Dress for the dinner is ‘dress like you are never going home’ otherwise black tie will suffice.

To all members, I have been requested to remind you of the following.

To comply with our liquor licence, members are requested that all guests they invite to the club should be signed in.

The club operates on an honour system in the bar, and it would be appreciated that bar chits are filled in for any items purchased from the bar.

As we have limited parking available, it would be appreciated if members only park their cars in this limited area if they are enjoying the facilities of the club. Please do not park there if you are going into the city or the football, as it disadvantages other members who wish to enjoy the club.

Thank you.

TENNIS COMMITTEE
Michael Williams

From the 29^th of June to the 4^th of July, RMTC hosted the first combined junior carnival, hosting the best under 26 year olds from USA and UK. Historically each individual country plays each other in home and away format, either every year in the case of USA vs. UK (Van Allen), or every second year USA vs. AUS (Clothier Cup) & UK vs. AUS (Limb Trophy). The decision was made to combine all the tournaments and play them every two years.

The teams consisted of:

Australia: Michael Williams, Paul Rosedale, James Gould, Chris Hince, Simon Carr and John Moran.

USA: Dylan Ward, Paul Monaghan, Laurenson Ward and Adrian Camacho.

UK: Ed Kay, Ben Boddington, Jamie Giddins and Charlie Braham.

Matches were to be 8 rubbers each, 4 singles and 4 doubles.

The First 2 matches were USA vs. AUS and USA vs. UK, these were both won 8 rubbers to 0 by Australia and United Kingdom respectively. On the final two days Australia played United Kingdom which didn’t go as well as we would have liked going down 7 matches to 1, however there were 2 matches in which 6/5 in the third did not go our way. Despite all the fierce competition on the court there was lots of fun and bonding off the court.

We would like to thank RMTC for hosting, the pros for all the marking, Richard Pagone and Alister Curley for organising, Julie Baker for making a fantastic lunch for the players every day and especially the visiting teams for coming over to make the event such a success.

TENNIS COMMITTEE
Fiona Hewson

Over the weekend the Club was buzzing with 10 eager doubles pairs and a few of Santa’s helpers in anticipation of a Christmas feast.

Preparations of turkey and all the trimmings started in the early morning whilst Santa’s helpers (aka Julie ‘the Pasta Baker’) decorated the room with all things Christmassy. Fiona’s banana bread was served mid morning as smells of the turkey continued to waft through the Club.

Meanwhile, a tennis tournament was merrily rolling along with a Limb Court and a Hamer Court pool, that eventuated in some very close results. Seasoned doubles player Kate Paton with RMTC newcomer Jeremy Hawkins stole a place in the finals from John Link and Marissa Barter-Waters by 2%. Michelle O’Rorke and James Guest, Carla Story and our new professional John Woods-Casey also ventured out as well as a mix of relatively experienced and new players.

All players got in to the Christmas spirit both on and off the court sitting down to a traditional lunch of turkey, chipolatas, ham, roast veggies and brussell sprouts. Speaking of high spirits, a large amount of brandy made it’s way in to the various home made plum puddings (thanks to Michelle and Carla for all things pudding), the brandy butter was oozing (thanks to Julie Baker) and of course the brandy cream, thanks to Carla. As if that wasn’t enough, Marissa flamed the pudding as we all sang “We wish you a merry Christmas”. The final was well contested, however Kate and Jeremy were just too strong in the end.

K Paton/J Hawkins def A Lester/P Fenwick 6/3.

Thanks to Frankie and the team for putting together the draw and Paul Tabley for orchestrating all things tennis on the day.

There seems to be some confusion regarding lesson charges. The booking system will pick up two charges on the day of your lesson, one for the professionals time and one for the court time, it is not a double charge as many members have mistaken it to be. I hope this now clarifies the lesson charges for members.
