Clothier / Van Alen /Limb Cups

Robert Kininmonth
President

For the first time the best juniors (<26yo) representing USA, UK and Australia will be competing for these prized trophies at the one venue - Melbourne. This is your opportunity to see the emerging real tennis talent from here and around the world. You’ll notice some seriously large kit bags filling the change room and a smattering of English and American accents in the Club, so make our guests welcome by introducing yourself and cheering them from the galleries. We’ll be starting proceedings at 10am on Tuesday this week with USA v Australia (Clothier Cup) followed by a welcome cocktail party that evening. Throughout the week until Saturday the UK v USA compete for the Van Alen Cup and UK v Australia battle it out for the Limb Cup. There will be plenty of opportunity for the teams to form strong bonds both on and off the court, with social activities including Friday night footy at the MCG (thanks Andrew Gould, MCCRTS), dinner at the Club on Saturday (thanks Jon Hamer) plus the mandatory exploration of Melbourne’s bar scene (thanks Georgie Lewis, Richard Pagone and the Junior Sub-Committee - tough job, but someone has to do it!). Thank you to those members who have offered to billet our guests. This is very much appreciated. Also, thank you Julie Baker for providing lunches throughout the week for these active hungry men. For everyone else, come in to the Club for lunch this Wednesday and Friday to enjoy watching some great tennis with the best steak sandwich in town (it is seriously good) plus other great fare served up by our fantastic resident chef Evie. The America team consists of Paul Monaghan, Dylan Ward, Laurenson Ward and Adrian Camacho. The UK Team consists of Charlie Braham, Jamie Giddins, Ed Kay and Ben Boddington (a familiar face to many around the club). The Australia team consists of Michael Williams, Paul Rosedale, Chris Hince, James Gould, Simon Carr and John Moran. Currently the UK Team is the holder of the Van Alen Cup (UK v US) and the Limb Trophy (UK v AUS). The Australian team are the holders of the Clothier Cup. ___________________________________________________________________________________________ SOCIAL COMMITTEE Julie Baker The welcome cocktail party is on Tuesday 30 June and the cost will be $20 per head and the dinner at the Club on Saturday night will be $40 per head, so please put your name on the sign up sheet on the board outside the pros office. See you there. ___________________________________________________________________________________________ THE END Copyright © 2015 Royal Melbourne Tennis Club, All rights reserved.

For those playing on the north court, you will notice a new on court recording system has been installed by our resident super handyman Mal. This new system enables you to record footage of your games, lessons, tantrums, etc. Bring your own USB memory device (8gb) to take your recording home. Please ask the pros for assistance and an instruction sheet is beside the equipment by the court entrance. We hope you enjoy using this new technology to improve your game.

Judith Clarke Trophy & Australian Ladies Amateur Singles and Doubles 2015 was played in Hobart from Friday 19^th-Sunday 21^st June 2015.

The Judith Clarke trophy is named after one of the greats of the game, Judith was a previous world champion and an ambassador of women’s tennis. This event really carries the flame that keeps tennis going between the RMTC and the Hobart club and promotes the ladies game. It is an important fixture in the Real Tennis calendar for Australian Ladies tennis and it was wonderful to see so many of the original team competing last weekend – including Rose Snell, Prue McCahey, Karen Toates and Julianne Drewitt.
Fast forward a few years, we arrived in Hobart last Friday 19^th June, looking forward to a full weekend of tennis and social activity, and as usual, Hobart organised a wonderful weekend.

RMTC team: Lizzie Brown, Di Rennard, Prue McCahey, Rose Snell, Judith Sear, Carla Story, Michelle O’Rorke and Fiona Hewson

Hobart team: Karen Toates, Christine Stirling, Julianne Drewitt, Lee McLean, Becca Lunnon, Sue Davis, Esther Wynhoven, Charlotte Toates, Janet Thorpe and Elle Davis.

Hobart took the early lead in the Judith Clarke Trophy winning the first match when Karen Toates and Julianne Drewitt defeated Prue McCahey and Rose Snell in a 9/7 thriller. RMTC teams progressed well in the Australian Amateur singles and doubles on Friday with Lizzie and Michelle both getting a win in the singles. As Hobart had been kind enough to organise a food wine and music festival for us (Dark MoFo), the RMTC teamed with the Hobart crew walking down to the docks to sample the wine, beer, cider and food of all regions on offer. Hot gin toddies were a great way to stay warm around open fires listening to live music.
Having not hobbled ourselves too seriously, RMTC won the first four Judith Clarke matches on Saturday but lost the remaining two to finish with a 4/3 lead. Karen Toates / Julianne Drewitt and Prue McCahey / Rose Snell won through their early amateur doubles rounds and Judith beat Lizzie in the amateur singles, no doubt the 8am start had something to do with it! It was great to see Karen back on court.

On Saturday night we were treated to an amazing home cooked feast, thanks to chef Hilton Booth (Hobart social committee) and Karen Toates’ wonderful cheesecake, for which we have already nabbed the recipe! As Barry put it, all the Melbourne ladies knocked each other out in the Australian Amateur early rounds over Friday and Saturday, before Rose and Prue set themselves up for the double; a final in the singles against each other, and then doubles finalists also.

As play continued on Sunday the frosty sub zero weather and frost on the ground proved too much for the RMTC handicap pairs, where Hobart drew level and forged ahead 6 sets-5, with one final and very alive rubber to play, all that remained was Michelle O’Rorke and Elle Davis to play the final set to a full dedans. Midway through half the dedans departed for the airport, it was left to Michelle O’Rorke to save our bacon and level the score for a draw, which she did valiantly after some amazing tennis from newcomer Elle Davis of Hobart. So we had some challenging handicap tennis and some even more challenging fight of the fittest with many sets being played over the weekend, but tennis was the winner overall.

Results:
Australian Amateur Singles Final was a well fought match that Prue McCahey was victorious over Rose Snell in 3 sets.
Australian Amateur Singles Final P McCahey def R Snell 6/3 5/6 6/1
Australian Amateur Doubles Final P McCahey & R Snell def K Toates & J Drewitt 6/1 6/2 (it was a shame Karen hurt herself early in the match).
Judy Clarke Trophy was a draw with Hobart 6 sets to RMTC 6 sets.

Huge thanks to our billets and social hosts from Hobart, to Barry and Patrick in the pro shop and to all who contributed to the weekend from both Clubs. We look forward to seeing our Hobartian friends the same time next year for Dark Mofo, and of course in Melbourne for the Judy Clark Trophy 2016.

Christmas in July Coming soon…
Sign up now for this mixed doubles on 11 July, tennis and Christmas feast.
Following on from this great ladies weekend just had in Hobart, I would like to invite all interested in playing in the RMTC’s main mixed doubles event for the year, the Christmas in July mixed doubles.

Please let me know via email if you would like to play or sign up on the noticeboard, you may sign up with a partner or leave it to us to find you a suitable match. Similar to previous years, we will do a Christmas dinner on the Saturday night, with the tennis being played on Saturday during the day, prior to the dinner.

I am calling for any volunteers to assist with preparation of the Christmas meal, please contact Fiona Hewson change@fionahewson.com (mailto:change@fionahewson.com) or 0417 084 599 to advise of your culinary skills.
End.

Welcome John Woods-Casey to our Pro team

It is with great pleasure that I announce the appointment of John Woods-Casey to the role of RMTC junior professional. John will commence working full-time with Frank and the team commencing Monday 22nd June. John may be familiar to many of you already, for he is a current member and player of both tennis and squash at the Club. In fact he was a member of our premiership squash team last season. He’s a delightful young man, very enthusiastic, passionate about racquet sports and an adept sportsman. We’re confident he’ll make a terrific tennis professional. So please welcome John to his new role when you’re next in the Club.

2015 World Masters

Many of the senior members of the Club went to the UK in May to represent Australia in the teams events and to compete in the World Masters singles and doubles events.

The results and commentary (reported from the UK viewpoint) are set out on the Tennis and Rackets Association’s website in the Latest News & Events – Tennis tab at

www.tennisandrackets.com/NewsItem.aspx?id=1339>

and

www.tennisandrackets.com/NewsItem.aspx?id=1345>

As expected the UK won all the 3 team events, the Cockram ( over 50s), the Bostwick (over 60s) and the Danby (over 70s). The Bostwick team came closest to beating the Poms losing 3/2 with Ian Bull/ Jon Hamer and Mike MacAuley/Wayne Spring winning their doubles matches. Our Cockram team was missing its best players and lost to both the UK and the US with Richard Hince (Captain) winning the only match, a very good win in 3 sets over Bill Baker who was in very good form throughout the competition.Alan Willingham and Tony Poolman took the very capable pair of John Ward and Paul Danby to 3 sets, but were unable to get the win.

The teams played at different venues (Cockram at Cambridge, Bostwick at Newmarket and Danby at Prested), but we all came together for a dinner at the Jockey Club in Newmarket – well, apart from the UK Danby team which reportedly was not allowed to attend because of the important match the following day! All teams had an important match the following day and those enjoying the magnificent food and surroundings of the Jockey Club were moderately well behaved. The Poolmans kindly hosted a get together at Tim and Savannah’s house in Newmarket on the Friday night which was very much appreciated.

The individual events, Masters singles and doubles, were held at Cambridge, where there are 2 courts, the Green and the Blue – which play completely differently! The schedule for play sought to have the Over 50s and 0ver 55s play first ( with finals played before the Mid Tournament dinner on the Tuesday) with the Over 60s, over 65s, over 70s and Over 75s played in the second half of the week. This aided the “youngsters” in being able to get away, but also meant the more mature players had some time off and only a few remained by the time the Tournament ended on the Sunday.

The tournament was a great opportunity to make and renew friendships with overseas players and marvel at how some of the Masters of the past continue to play fine shots regardless of their increasing age. The most outstanding player of the Tournament in the weight/for age stakes was John Prenn who won 4 events. He is over 60 but fit and in fine playing form – an inspiration to those who would like to “play like they used to”!

The next Masters tournament and teams events is to be held in Australia in 2017. Planning for this has already begun. Check your birth date and start training now.

The Quarterly Medal

The five players Kathryn Arndt, Richard Endersbee, Julia McCahey, Greg Moran and Paul Scully contested in the quarterly medal round robin in the afternoon. The winner of the contests overall was Greg with a 4-0 scorecard. The rest generally shared the sets but Richard who was the player with the best handicap struggled against some severe handicaps to win a set. Thanks go to our new President Fred and Richard Simpson for organizing the day.

Winners of the other groups were Nick Brand and Steve Wood
