There always seems to be a major tournament on every month and March has proven to be no exception. Last weekend the RMTC hosted the Percy Finch/Australian Amateur Doubles double act for the second year running. It is a weekend during which all players get more than enough tennis. The Percy Finch consists of two teams these days each picked from the RMTC and HTC. Hobart compiled a strong party of 13 players (there top 5 players were handicapped at 11 or better) and we also furnished a combined team of 13 players. Between the 2 teams we played 12 singles matches and 6 doubles and the results were as follows (Melbourne players on left):

Percy Finch 1
Happell/Richardson def. Booth/Booth 4/6 6/5 6/4
Snow/Sievers def. Boyles/Ramsay 6/3 6/3
B Richardson lost to K Booth 4/6 6/2 6/0
D Williams def. G Blundstone 6/3 6/0
J Snow def. H Booth 6/3 6/5
M Happell def. P Boyles 6/1 6/1
M Williams def. J Rackham 6/0 6/1
C Sievers def. A Ramsay 6/1 6/5
Williams/Williams def. Boyles/Rackham 6/1 6/1

Percy Finch 2
R Hince def. P Bradfield 6/0 6/0
P Stanley def. P Dunne 6/3 6/4
W Cockram def. G Kerin 6/3 6/1
O Guest def. J Davey 6/3 6/3
A Norton def. J Legg 6/3 6/1
J Hamer def. N Rooke 6/2 6/3
Carr/Hurburgh def. Dunne/Holloway 6/2 6/0
Guest/Hince def. Kerin/Legg 6/0 6/0
Cockram/Hamer def. Davey/Rooke 6/2 6/2

As you can see the RMTC did quite well, winning 8-1 and 9-0 respectively. Doubtless Graham Bradfield’s late scratching disrupted the balance of the visiting side. The dinner held at the club on Saturday night was for around 30 and was especially enjoyable thanks to Andrea and Jon Hamer’s combined culinary skills … as well as the score line. The only thing missing on the night was Bradfield’s traditional late night, somewhat coherent and lengthy ramble that is sometimes called a speech. Bradders, you were missed.

As is customary, the Australian Amateur Doubles is played alongside the Percy Finch and we had enough pairings to field two divisions. The scores appear below but I draw particular mention to Kieran and Hilton Booth who won the event for the 5^th year running when they defeated Happell and Richardson – it is interesting to note that during their five year reign they have never beaten Happell and Richardson in the Percy Finch. Hilton Booth’s form over the weekend was especially commendable as was that of Richard Hince. Richard didn’t drop a single game in the Percy Finch and in the Aus Amateur he carried me all the way in the B Division.

Australian Amateur Doubles
Williams/Williams def. Boyles/Ramsay 6/2 6/1 6/2
Happell/Richardson def. Williams/Williams 6/3 6/3 6/3
Booth/Booth def. Snow/Sievers 6/5 6/2 6/3
Winners
Booth/Booth def. Happell/Richardson 6/3 6/4 1/6 6/3

Australian Amateur Doubles B Division
Guest/Hince def. Carr/Cockram 6/4 6/0
Hamer/Hurburgh def. Dunne/Legg 6/0 6/2
Winners
Guest/Hince def. Hamer/Hurburgh 6/2 6/1

Thank you to everyone who took part and a big thank you to Julie Baker for arranging lunch for everyone over the long weekend.

As always there are tournaments on the horizon so please check your calendars and get involved.

FROM THE TENNIS COMMITTEE
Owen Guest

We have seen a wide variety of tennis in the club over the last few weekends. Two weeks ago the juniors played in the 60 and Under doubles tournament, as well as the latest edition of the perennial 100 and Over doubles tournament and the weekend just gone saw the club hosting the Victorian Amateur Singles and Doubles.

Congratulations to Paul Rosedale and Dan Williams who won the 60 and Under tournament. Following a long days’ play of round-robin doubles against 6 other pairs they found themselves pitted against Chris Hince and Simon Carr in the final which they won 5/3. Well done to Richard Pagone and the junior committee for pushing this event as it is always good to see the club’s junior players up and about.

60 and Under Doubles
Rosedale/D Williams def. C Hince/S Carr 5/3

The 100 and Over doubles event has been a staple on the club calendar for longer than most can remember and it is still as popular as ever. This year 8 pairs competed for the title including J Gould and John Link the defending champions as well as the now recognised pair of Scopelliti and Piccolo, otherwise known as the Men of Monza (Ed. – it must be their speed). Everyone brought their best form on the day although one passing American didn’t think so when he remarked to Julian Snow on recognising him “hey, I remember you, you used to be good”. It will surprise no one to hear that the truth is Julian, paired with Wendy Whitehead, was playing very well on the day. The final was played between Graeme Blundstone (Ed. – somehow playing off 15!) and Philip Barker against Anne-Maree Lester and Michelle O’Rorke and rounded out what was a fun day for all.

100 and Over Doubles
Blundstone/Barker def. Lester/O’Rorke 8/5

Last weekend we hosted the Victorian Amateur and for the first time in many years attracted the majority of the leading amateur players into the draw. With Kieran Booth being overseas the singles draw opened up allowing many a realistic chance to take the title. Bret Richardson was the top seed but he failed to reach the final on account of having to withdraw from his semi on account of injury. This allowed Chris Sievers passage to his first singles finals this century! On the other side of the draw Pete Boyles (from Hobart) defeated Michael Williams 6/3 1/6 6/4 in a quarter final before losing to Dan Williams in the other semi – 6/3 6/2. In the final Chris got off to a strong start and led the first set 5/2 before Dan staged an even stronger comeback to win 6/5. The second set was also close and Chris missed one or two chances to close it before Dan won it also 6/5.

The doubles offered the chance for the no. 1 seeds Happell and Richardson to show off their top billing against the winner of two strong teams playing in the other semi final. Boyles and Sievers had to play the Williams brothers in the second semi of the Vic Am Doubles and it was quite a match. The final score of 6/2 2/6 6/5 to Boyles and Sievers fully reflects the endeavour of the players and closeness of the pairings. All four players showed their doubles expertise not least when Michael Williams hit a ball so hard that all the players managed to get out of the way leaving only the marker, Tabs, to wear it through the net. In the final the Richardson combination was too strong for Sievers and Boyles. One point stood out as the ball must have crossed the net at least 25 times as both Sievers and Boyles hit ball after ball firmly to Bret’s partner in a deliberate attempt to remove Bret from the rally. As Bret’s partner looked to be increasingly tired as the rally wore
on it came as some relief when Bret crossed at the net and picked off a volley putting it straight into the Winning Gallery. We all roared with appreciation for Bret’s play as he hit the ball for the first time in a rally topping 50 shots (Ed. – we of small minds, well played Mike).

A plate event was also played for those players who didn’t make the finals. This was a small round-robin singles event which allowed Graeme Blundstone to show the improvement to his game he’s made over the last year or so. Well done to Graeme, not only for winning the Victorian Amateur Plate event, but also for recently achieving a single figure handicap, an achievement not made by many.

60 and Under Handicap Doubles
Richard Pagone

The ‘60 and Under Handicap Doubles’ was played at the RMTC on Saturday the 14th of February. It was great to see the 14 participants turn out for the 3rd edition of this event, marking the 3rd consecutive year of 7 or more pairings, in what is fast becoming one of the most popular annual tournaments for the RMTC’s young members. With many new faces taking part, a relaxed BBQ during the day and a few returning competitors, the tournament confirmed the growing cohort of enthusiastic young members getting involved at the club over the last few years. The tournament got a new champion pairing with Paul Rosedale and Daniel Williams emerging victorious, defeating Simon Carr and co-defending champion Chris Hince 5/3 in a reduced, yet very entertaining set.

FROM THE TENNIS COMMITTEE
Owen Guest

Welcome back everyone to 2015 tennis at the RMTC. Of course, for those of you who took part in the Roo Trophy, Australian Open or the Pro-Am your tennis is already well and truly under way. Having the company of Dutch players join us was obviously a pleasant surprise and let’s hope we see a Dutch team or two at the next Boomerang. Well done to the winners (Luke Piccolo: Roo Singles; Hugo vander Meer and Oscar Knotschke: Roo Doubles). Well done also to Camden Riviere, the games world #1, who visited our shores and took home the silverware for every event he entered (Australian Open Singles; the Australian Open Doubles with Julian Snow and the ARTA Pro-Am with 77 year old James Guest). Well done also to Chris Chapman who reached the final of the AO Singles and thank you for making the trip and supporting our event.

The regular calendar of RMTC events starts up in earnest in February with D and B Grade Pennant starting in the first week. You should by now have received your calendar in the mail, a quick perusal will draw your attention to the fact that the 100 Years and Over h’cap Doubles is coming up as well as the Victorian Amateur Singles and Doubles for the more competitive amongst us (this will be graded depending on the level of entrees). So please check the notice board and sign up if you wish to play.

There is as usual a robust fixture of events in 2015. One thing to take note of is the return of the year round Graded events, both off scratch and handicap. The draws are already up and matches are getting underway. Everyone has been placed in their appropriate draw so if you haven’t played in a while this is the year you will find yourself back on court!

One more thing, the Percy Finch (alongside the Australian Amateur Doubles) is set to take place at the RMTC over the March long weekend (6^th – 8^th) and Hobart look to be sending two strong teams to challenge us. So if you would like to be considered for the RMTC teams (approx. handicap 35 or better) could you please send me an email at oguest@bigpond.net.au (mailto:oguest@bigpond.net.au) ?

And finally, good luck to Nick Howell on his imminent move to Newport. Last Friday Nick played Kieran Booth (the world #6) in the final of the MCC Gold Racket and beat him 6/5 6/0. This is far and away Nick’s best result so far but doubtlessly the first of many wins against the games’ best players. Well played Nick, both on and off the court.

Good luck in 2015 and enjoy your tennis.

Owen Guest

SOCIAL COMMITTEE

Last Friday saw about sixty of us collect at the Club to farewell Nick Howell, as he leaves to take up the Pro position at Newport. After the Exhibition Match, MCC Gold Racquet, the younger members fired up the BBQ and cooked chipolatas. Of course the Pro team, Frankie, Jonners, Kate and Tabs were present. As were James Gould, Alistair Curley, Andrew Gould, Richard Pagone, Owen Guest, Julia MacCahey, Dick and Julie Friend, Lizzie Brown and Rob and Prue McCahey to name a few.

Barbara, who has ably manned the kitchen on Wednesday and Friday, has resigned. We thank her for providing quality lunches including her delicious pies in winter. I will certainly miss her sausage rolls- used at many a Club function. The Committee is now looking for a new cook. If you are aware of someone who would be interested in cooking good Mediterranean type food for between three and twelve members, Wednesday and Friday weekly (not including January), would you please phone Julie Baker 0412411624

TOURNAMENT DIRECTOR
Greg Cornish

The Roo Trophy was played at RMTC from Saturday 17 January to Saturday 23 January. There were 67 players in the tournament and it was a pleasure to welcome to the tournament not only our own RMTC members, but also eight Dutch real tennis players and our real tennis cousins from Ballarat and Sydney.

The Club was very active all week: 155 Roo matches were played (78 doubles and 77 singles) and the Australian Men’s and Ladies’ Opens and Pro-Am took place. It was an outstanding job by the Pros to mark all matches and help with the running of the tournament. Our sincere thanks to Frank, Jonathan, Nick, Kate, Paul, Graham and our “temporary junior” Hugo.

One of the features of the tournament was that it attracted players of all ages, ranging from 18 to 78! It is surely a hallmark of this fine game that players young and not so young can play competitively against each other (and enjoy doing so). There were many close matches and some interesting struggles (courtesy of the handicap system), all played competitively to the very last point.

The Roo tournament dinner was enjoyed by some 60 players and partners at the Club on Friday 23 January. It was a perfect summer’s evening in Melbourne and the Club provided the perfect setting for dinner. In his welcome speech Jon Hamer highlighted the early exploration of Australia by the Dutch and that they have returned this time to play real tennis! This provided the lead for an entertaining thank you speech later in the evening from Theo Bollerman, the doyen of Dutch real tennis. Special thanks go to Julie Baker and Lizzie Brown for making sure the food, drinks and general ambiance were just right on the night.

The Roo Trophy tournament was first played in 2003 and this year for the first time we have a trophy for the Roo Trophy. The Club is grateful to Alan Willingham who generously designed and made the Roo Trophy, appropriately in the style of the Boomerang trophy.

Planning for this year’s tournament started in early October and the organisation, communication and running of the Roo Trophy 2015 owes much to the willing contributions of the following people – Fiona Hewson, Helen Pritchard, Julie Baker, Gary Lee, Owen Guest, Frank Filippelli, and Jonathan Howell.

Congratulations to everyone who played in the tournament and in particular to Luke Piccolo for winning the Roo Trophy 2015 Singles and Hugo van der Meer and Oscar Knotschke for winning the Roo Trophy 2015 Doubles.

VICE PRESIDENT
Fred Kininmonth

This last week we have witnessed some incredible singles and doubles play from a fine contingent of visiting professionals and world’s best local amateurs. Congratulations to Camden Riviere, World #1 and winner of the Australian Open Men’s Singles title, defeating Chris Chapman 6/1 6/2 6/2, plus the Men’s Doubles title with the evergreen Julian Snow. Camden now holds all four Open titles (the Cam Slam) which is a very special achievement.

The local dynamic duo of Kieren Booth & Bret Richardson put on a powerhouse display in the doubles final going toe to toe with Camden & Julian before going down 4/6 6/1 6/2 6/3. To see some of the best net play and power hitting seen in this club, I suggest you go to the RMTC YouTube channel (http://youtu.be/lZ-bLFEgr50) and watch the first set for starters.

Congratulations to Harriet Ingham from the Royal Tennis Club at Hampton Court. There she is under the fine tutelage of resident professional Chris Chapman. Harriet travelled to Australia to compete in only her second Open. She enjoyed a fine battle with our very own Prue McCahey to win her first Open Championship 6/4 3/6 6/4. A 6/4 4/6 6/2 win in the Women’s Open Doubles with partner Jo Edwards (Ballarat Tennis Club) has added to her excess baggage worries when she flies back home tonight. Home court favourites Rose Snell & Prue McCahey entertained the gallery with a great fight in the doubles final.

RMTC Pro-Am
Today the Pro-Am was played, with Camden Riviere / James Guest winning 8/5 in a terrific final against the entertaining pair of Paul Tabley / Gary Lee. All matches were played in great spirit and a wonderful lunch prepared by Julie Baker was enjoyed by all. Thank you to the pro’s for making it a great day of tennis; Camden Riviere, Chris Chapman, Frank Filippelli, Jonathan Howell, Nick Howell, Paul Tabley, Graham Hyland, and Corben White. Thanks to the members who played for being financial contributors to the the prize pool shared by the professionals.
RMTC Thanks
Events like the Australian Open and Roo Trophy do not run without the great support from a team of helpers and supporters. Thank you to Frank Filippelli and the pro-team including, Jonners, Nick, Kate, Tabs, Hugo and a special thanks to Graham “Champagne” Hyland for travelling up from the apple isle to lend a hand. All players thoroughly appreciate their marking and friendly support around the Club.
Thank you to Andrew Gould for being being tournament referee for the Australian Open finals. Thank you to ARTA and the RMTC Benefactors for financially supporting the Australian Open and organisers Owen Guest, Fred Kininmonth and Julie Baker.

PRODUCTION
A special thanks to Clive Smith from Fuzzy TV for designing and installing a state-of-the-art 5 camera system and training Fiona Hewson, Chris Hince and Fred Kininmonth in it’s operation this week.
When it comes to organising the Roo Trophy, we thank Greg Cornish, Fiona Hewson, Frank, Jonners, Helen and the pro-team who have done a sterling job assembling a large field of 32 doubles pairs and 48 singles players to compete in over 150 matches. Again, thank you to Julie Baker for arranging delicious food for the functions. Also, thank you to Gary Lee for finding billets for our visiting guests. Especially the very fun contingent of 8 players from Holland, a result of the “Hugo factor”. It’s fair to say the Club is alive and pumping this January with everyone enjoying the combination of Roo Trophy and Australian Open providing plenty of opportunity to watch a play some great tennis.
