Exhibition Street Cup (16-17 May) – results

This is a sought after trophy and an honour board event, thanks to Josef Brunhuber. Thus there was fierce competition amongst the 8 pairs for some gold lettering. None competed better last Sunday than Michele O’Rorke / Scott Patterson who defeated the uber talented duo of Lizzie Brown / Georgie Lewis 6/4 in the doubles final. Michelle’s accurate shots into the dedans and Scott’s returns from the tambour were too much in the end. Georgie gave it her all, including several glorious “floor” shots – where she ended up at full stretch on the floor at more than a yard worse than last. It was also nice to see Frankie and Tabs competing on court in this event with members enjoying their matches all the more for their presence.

Evergreen Julian Snow once again staked his claim to being the best handicap tournament player in the Club by defeating Paul Rosedale 9/5 in the singles final. Paul struggled to find a serve to restrict Julian who punished Paul by relentlessly hitting deep into the side wall with heavy cut to Paul’s backhand. Some expected aggressive forcing by Paul was not enough to overcome Julian’s tight floor game. Again, Julian wins!

Thank you to all those that competed, watched and marked the matches – including Kate and Jonners. We all thoroughly enjoyed the stunning beef fillet for lunch on Sunday prepared by Julie Baker. Also a special thanks to Wally Cockram for organising the tournament.

Dear Members, it has been bought to our attention that some members are leaving their cars in the RMTC carpark for the entire day, and members who are trying to park so they can enjoy their tennis and the club facilities are experiencing difficulties in finding a parking spot. Please be considerate of other members and make other arrangements for the parking of your car if you are not using the club facilities at the time. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

MAIN COMMITTEE
Robert Kininmonth

132nd AGM

Thank you to those of you who attended the 132nd AGM and trophy presentation at the Club last Wednesday. For those unable to attend here are some comments taken from the minutes now displayed on the Club notice board.

The Treasurer (Rudi Michelson) outlined the strong financial position of the Club, finishing last year with a healthy $96k operating surplus, whilst holding subscriptions and fee increases below CPI. Our ‘future fund’ investment portfolio is now valued at $1.3m.

Andrew Buckle reported on Building and Grounds: completion of lighting upgrade, video camera and streaming system and the women’s change rooms, and upcoming projects including roofing/ventilation upgrade and men’s change room upgrades.

Robert Kininmonth reported on Strategy: the re-invigoration of squash, developing relations with other clubs to foster real tennis, changes in accounts processes and target to have $2m in our “future fund” by 2020.

Owen Guest reported on Tennis: the 2014 World Championships and 2015 Australian Open carnival were held successfully, changes to the club graded and handicap competitions to encourage further participation, and junior events via the junior sub-committee such as the under-60 tournament, which is now a fixture.

Kathryn Arndt reported on Membership, noting that 400 active members out of 571 members is a good indicator or high participation, and that initiatives with junior and womens’ tennis are important for achieving diversity.

The President, Jon Hamer, noted that in the last twelve months the following retired from Committee: Alastair Curley, Michael Wooldridge and Phillip Barker. The President thanked them for their efforts and the meeting offered a round of applause. The President reminded members that the members of the Committee and sub-committees are volunteers, and strongly encouraged members to participate and serve on committees and sub-committees which are vital for the running of the club.

Both Robert Kininmonth and Jon Hamer were re-elected to the Committee. Kathryn Arndt and Owen Guest were elected to the Committee to fill vacancies.

The President thanked Frank Filippelli and the professional staff and Helen Pritchard in Accounts for their excellent service in the past year.

Congratulations to the trophy winners who collected their trophies on the night. A special thanks to Owen and Tabs who put their name on the map when it comes to selecting trophies – a table full of very large ’spinning globes of the world’ as prizes brought a smile to the recipients.

At the post AGM Committee meeting the following office bearers were elected: President – Robert (Fred) Kininmonth, Vice President – Richard Simpson, Treasurer – Rudi Michelson, Honorary Secretary – Kathryn Arndt. Fellow Committee members are Julie Baker – Social, Andrew Buckle – Building, House & Grounds, Jon Hamer – Tennis, Owen Guest – Membership.

Please contact members of the Committee if you would be keen to support the Club by volunteering to serve on a sub-committee. Thank you.

TENNIS COMMITTEE
Owen Guest

Recently it has been relatively quiet time for tennis on the local front but there has been plenty of action elsewhere. Last week Hobart hosted the Bathurst Cup (a Davis Cup style event involving amateur players from Australia, France, the UK and USA) and at the end of the week our Australian team were the winners for only the 5^th time. The Bathurst Cup was first held in 1922 and for most of its history Australia’s pedigree has not been strong. Our first, and what remained for a long time only win, came in 1982. However, this win now gives us four wins from the last five going back to 2006.

The 2015 team, captained by Mike Happell and anchored by Kieran Booth performed admirably throughout, and in the final in particular, were pushed to the limit by the UK team with victory not being secured until the 5^th and final match of the Tie. The results were as follows:

Bathurst Cup Final – AUS def Great Britain 3/2
Day 1 Singles
Kieran Booth def. Conor Medlow 6/1 6/1 6/3
Bret Richardson lost to Jamie Douglas 5/6 6/2 4/6 6/0 3/6
Day 2 Doubles
Booth/Richardson def. Douglas/Medlow 5/6 6/2 6/1 3/6 6/0
Day 3 Reverse Singles
Bret Richardson lost to Conor Medlow 2/6 6/5 6/4 6/4
Kieran Booth def. Jamie Douglas 6/1 6/1 6/2

Bathurst Cup 3^rd vs. 4^th – France def USA 5/0
Day 1 Singles
Mattieu Sarlangue def. Patrick Winthrop 6/3 6/3
Julien Bey def. Jon Crowell 3/6 6/2 6/4
Day 2 Doubles
Brunoro/Sarlangue def. Ben Cook/Winthrop 6/4 6/3
Day 3 Reverse Singles
Benjamin Jacquin-Turrettini def. Jonathon Crowell 6/5 3/6 6/5
Michel Brunoro def.Ben Cook 6/2 6/1

Bathurst Cup 1^st Semi-final – AUS def France 5/0
Day 1 Singles
Bret Richardson lost to Mattieu Sarlangue 6/5 6/3 3/6 6/4
Kieran Booth def. Julien Bey 6/2 6/0 6/0
Day 2 Doubles
Booth/Richardson def. Brunoro/Sarlangue 6/3 6/2 6/2
Day 3 Reverse Singles
Bret Richardson def. Julien Bey 6/0 6/2 4/6 6/1
Pete Boyles def. Michel Brunoro 1/6 6/4 6/3

Bathurst Cup 2^nd Semi-final – UK def USA 4/1
Day 1 Singles
Conor Medlow def. Jon Crowell 6/4 6/4 6/1
Jamie Douglas def. Patrick Winthrop 6/3 6/3 6/0
Day 2 Doubles
Douglas/Medlow def. Cook/Winthrop 6/1 0/6 6/3 6/5
Day 3 Reverse Singles
Conor Medlow def. Patrick Winthrop 6/3 6/3
Louise Gordon lost to Jon Crowell 5/6 2/6 2/6

Mike Happell and Kieran Booth were interviewed on the local ABC radio and the broadcast can be found here: https://soundcloud.com/936-abc-hobart/the-real-tennis-action (http://hobarttennis.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=386f519d0c24151d8ad804255&id=603403a60d&e=dfbfb0a51c)

Elsewhere in the tennis world Claire Fahey retained her Ladies World Championship at Leamington when she defeated her sister Sarah Vigrass in the final 6/6 6/1. Alas, in the doubles, our very own Mary Wilson and Brigitte Claney were unable to defend their World Doubles Handicap title. Word has it that Brigitte suffered acute food poisoning which is a shame given the form the duo displayed two years ago, as surely they would otherwise be dual World Doubles Handicap title holders.

For those who are feeling the pinch from the recent tennis drought, put your name down for the upcoming Exhibition Street Cup, it is always a good weekend of tennis.

TENNIS COMMITTEE
Julian Snow

Ten pairs (not, oddly, including the tournament organiser), equally divided between the two courts, entered the club’s Old Scholars tournament on 22 March 2015, initially played on a round robin basis.

Hugo van der Meer, enjoying his final hours in Melbourne before his departure to the Netherlands to begin six years of tertiary education, paired up with Julian Snow to represent (somewhat flexibly) Julian’s old school Radley. They won all their four matches and won the south court group. Previous holders Tasmanians Dick Friend and Jacob Davey were runners-up.

Up north it was all a lot closer and semi-final qualification depended on the result of the final match. Wendy Whitehead paired up with a new toy boy Roo Trophy winner Luke Piccolo and they won this last match 6-0 no less against the Guest father and son combination, James’ strategizing for once misfiring. This whitewash enabled Michelle O’Rorke and Fiona Hewson to gain second place in the group and qualify further.

Wendy & Luke’s stellar form continued when they recorded a second 6-0 win in their semi-final against Dick & Jacob. Meanwhile Julian & Hugo overcame Michelle & Fiona in a somewhat closer match.

The final produced an excellent example of competitive handicap doubles play, with Radley conceding a handicap of receive 30, owe 40 and 1 serve banned the tambour.

Luke ran around like a maniac at the back, Wendy served tightly and chipped in with the occasional probing volley, Hugo continued to demonstrate his improved level and Julian played as he always does.

The match reached 5 games all whereupon Luke, seemingly deliberately and off the middle of the racket, played the ball into the winning gallery to leave the score receive 40 owe 40 favour of him & Wendy (i.e. 7 match points). One by one these were saved by Julian & Hugo. A better than two yards chase was set and successfully defended and the remaining points won by the Anglo-Dutch combination from the service end.

It was an exciting end to an excellent little tournament and a fitting conclusion to Hugo’s very successful stint at the RMTC
