The challenge match next week represents the culmination of two years’ competition among the world’s best players. For Robert Fahey, it has been straightforward. Since May last year, he has known that he would be defending his title here in Melbourne next week. (The Champion is required to defend every two years).

For Camden Riviere, it has been a two year journey. To become challenger, you need to play in as many tournaments as possible as the challengers are chosen from the top four ranked players on results over the two years to Dec 31 2013. Those four players then met in a series of eliminator matches during February and March to determine Rob’s challenger. In Camden’s case, he defeated Steve Virgona in the final eliminator in Chicago in March.

The World Tennis Championship is the oldest trophy is sport, dating back to 1740. Remarkably, Robert Fahey is only the 25th man to hold the title in all that time! As we get closer to the match on Tuesday, we should reflect on the amazing history of this event. Next week, one of these two men will make history.
