LINK PUMPS AUSTRALIAN OPEN

Good crowds enjoyed an excellent first day’s play as the seeds made their way untroubled into the quarterfinals.

5th seed Frank Filippelli defeated Brett Richardson 6/2 6/3 6/1. The powerful Richardson put up a valiant fight, but was no match for unerring consistency of the Filippelli game. Frank will now go on to meet RMTC Club Champion and 3rd seed, Kieran Booth in a mouth-watering quarterfinal, after Booth defeated RMTC young gun Michael Williams 6/0 6/1 6/1. While Williams’ talent was evident to all, he was unable to find the right balance of aggression and all-round consistency to challenge the accomplished world no 6.

In the afternoon session, 6th seed Ricardo Smith (UK) was too good for RMTC’s Graham Blundstone 6/2 6/0 6/1. Despite some good all-round play from Blundstone, he just couldn’t match the world number 11’s level. And finally last night saw 2nd seed Bryn Sayers (UK) take on the club’s up-and-coming professional Nick Howell. While it wasn’t quite the tough contest the crowd had hoped for, they were instead treated to a Sayers master class of precision and consistency, as he cruised to a 6/0 6/2 6/0 victory.

Today, there are four more Men’s Singles first round matches:

10am Peter Estcourt v CJ White
12.00 Ben Matthews (4) v Colin Lumley
3.30 Jonathan Howell v James Gould
5.30 Rob Fahey (1) v Daniel Williams

So good tennis to enjoy all day and, after work, why not enjoy a post work drink and see Daniel enter the Lion’s Den!

Tomorrow Wednesday is quarter finals day and some exciting tennis is on offer. Mark your diaries for 11am – Filippelli v Booth in a cracking match- and for 5pm when Ben Matthews (world no 7) should be taking on Ricardo Smith, ranked 11. That will be some game!

Finally, on Wed 15 Jan, we are holding the Australian Pro Am Doubles. This is your chance to partner up with the best in the world and enjoy a day of doubles. Players will be auctioned at this Friday’s Boomerang Cup opening cocktail party, so come along to that and get bidding! (If you can’t make Friday’s party and still wish to bid, please contact me on 0409 217 495.)

Best regard
