Christmas in July was celebrated this year at the tennis club on Bastille Day. The evening kicked off with French champagne, lots of mingling and Edith Piaf wafting in the background before a fabulous night unfolded. A delcious three course dinner and entertainment provided by a team of lady members, and a special visit from Santa and his helpers. Those children that were good all received a present from Santa, and those that were naughtly also received a present as Santa was feeling particularly generous!
After dinner, a flaming brandied plum pudding and a large amount of wine was consumed, the draw was announced for the next day’s mixed doubles event.
Those that drew the short straw bere back at 9am for 4 sets of doubles in a round robin, with three groups competing for the chance to play in the semi-finals.
It was a few of the regular finalists that we saw in the semis, and none other than the President and Lady Professional, Owen Guest and Kate Leeming in the final against Ballarat and Romsey members, Craig Jamieson and Wendy Whitehead. After 6 sets played in a row, no doubt Wendy and Craig were up against it in the final playing the experienced team of Kate and Owen. Playing with few mistakes, and the luxury of having the tambour, 2 serves and no floor restrictions, Owen and Kate loosened up and enjoyed themselves to a smooth victory. They were too strong for the away team, yet a wonderful effort for Craig and Wendy to be in the final and play so well all afternoon.
See you all next year.
Semi-Finalists- Carla Story and Mark Miller, Michelle O’Rorke and Chris Webb.
Final: Kate Leeming and Owen Guest def Wendy Whitehead and Craig Jamieson 6-1.
